I booted the laptop from the floppy, and ran FDisk at the a:\ prompt. Having selected the options you advised in your previous two posts I reached a screen with the following:

Partition C: 1
Status A
Type PRI DOS
Volume label (blank)
MBytes 4126
System FAT 32
Usage 100%

It asked me which primary partition I wanted to delete, I entered 1, and was then asked to enter a value for volume label.

That's how far I got. I really haven't the faintest idea what 'volume label' might be, perhaps more importantly, I don't know what value to enter.

Could you help with this please.

Firstly I would like to thank you sincerely for your help, advice and persistence with this matter, it is hugely appreciated.

I managed to reformat the hard drive, then carry out a fresh installation of windows 98. The machine is working normally (if a little bare).

I now have to install the various programmes that will hopefully enable me to get back to the music editing project. I mentioned in an earlier post that I shall leave the problem programme (WaveLab lite) until last this time, to ensure that no alterations in the registry impair its full range of functions.

Do you have any other advice before I set about the various installation procedures?

I have a feeling this whole scenario arose from the injudicious use of CCleaner registry utility, ought I to avoid its use on this machine?

A registry cleaner will not increase your system's speed or performance, and has the potential to break your registry to the point that your PC is no longer bootable.
We strongly advise that people stay away from any of the registry cleaners out there.

I am not a fan of any type of registry cleaner and unlike some I have found no use for them at all. Some good old fashion basic maintenance will keep your system running smoothly without the use of a registry cleaner. I've run into difficulty again.

I loaded the software successfully (including WaveLab lite), but there was no trace of any audio from the computer. I vaguely recall being prompted during the windows install some questions regarding PCI something or other which were defaulted to 'no', so I 'ok'd' them and completed the install. Now, in device manager there are two yellow question marks (see the attached file).

I installed an external sound card (Creative Soundblaster connect) which I had used effectively on my old XP machine, and which had worked effectively on this laptop before the reinstall was demanded. The installation was very problematic, resulting in a blue screen error message:

An exception OE has occurred at OD28:FF04C55E in VxD---. This was called from 0028:C004B472 in VxD---.

Options to continue by pressing any key were given, which led to a black screen. I had to reboot to start the machine again. I then received similar or identical messages at various intervals when I closed and/or opened various programmes.

I uninstalled, then reinstalled the sound blaster, and things have improved somewhat, the machine is a lot more stable, but I did still get one blue screen message just after reinstallation:

A fatal exception error has occurred at 0028:FF04C55E. The current application will be terminated.


At this precise moment I have the machine approximately where I need it, although time will tell whether it will be stable enough to work on.
But I can't help wondering if windows hasn't installed properly hence the apparent lack of any sound from the computer itself unless via the external sound card.

Is there anything you could suggest?

That didn't work I'm afraid. I carried out your instructions but when I tried to run the programme I received:

2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...
