i have a 5 year old compaq presario with lcd problem, ie split screen, multiple lines appearing. Apparantly this is a common problem that compaq/hp are aware of. my pc however has got to the stage where it wont even boot. i have a screen on booting uo offering option such as safe mode, last known etc. none of these options work. occasionally it gets to a starting page (with microsoft logo) but this quickly blue screens and goes to restart.
Is there anyway I can get back into the system to retrieve important data? is it possible to get the thing working again?

Get the program to analyse your HDD from the supplier of your HDD (WD, MAXTOR, SEAGATE ect) and test your Hard Drive to see if it is still working properly, if it does not pass the test than their is not much you can do to enter it as a boot device but you might still be able to connect it as a slave and try to rescue your important data from it.

Thanks for the reply. What is the best way to retrieve the data as a slave as I fear the laptop is kaput

You would need to connect your HDD to a desktop computer as a slave drive, (if your HDD is a SATA drive just connect it to an empty sata port,

if it is an IDE HDD then you will need to set the jumperra on your HDD accordingly (MASTER/SLAVE or CABLE SELECT) if you connect it as cable select make sure your master HDD is on the farthest connector on your IDE cable and the slave in the middle.

If your laptop HDD is IDE and on the desktop you will use you only have one IDE connector and that a DVD/CD is already connected to it (the desktop HDD are sata) connect the HDD as the master and your DVD/CD as the slave.

Other solution would be to use an external HDD enclosure
