Hello all. I have relied on this site for many years and love it. Thankfully, this is my first post in the virus, malware forum.

This is a problem that has occurred on my in-laws machine, which I've taken to my house and promised to make it like new again. Re-installation of the entire computer is an option, but not my goal at this point.

The symptoms described by my in-laws: sometimes fine, other times things very very slow. Sound would turn on and off without reason. Things would jam up completely and the computer would be restarted. Many times restarting helped.

I first examined the Norton suite log (came with their comcast internet and they chose to use it). It appeared that it was constantly blocking attempts to get at the computer. I could watch it happen in real time. It mentioned Svchost several times.

I did some researching on the internet about several of the items. I decided to start in safe mode (this is Windows XP) and run Malwarebytes. I did this and it found one problem file- sysvxd.exe. It listed it as trojan.fakealert. I chose to eliminate it. It said it needed to restart to make it official. I said ok. The computer then went into a series of uncontrolled reboots, never fully loading windows. I was not able to start in safe mode. When I selected "start windows with a previously working configuration" I was able to get windows to start regularly. Except within 30 seconds of having the desktop fully loaded, the computer rebooted without any input. I was able to get into safe mode again and run a full norton scan. It found one trojan horse. Again looking at recent history, I saw at least 6 other trojan horses that were quarantined just this past week.

I then ran OTL, with the log listed below.
I guess I have two problems now- figuring out why windows is not happy, and deleting any malware.
THANK YOU for any help!
~Matt

Hi there, lets start doing some slow removals initially

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    [2011/08/13 18:14:19 | 000,054,016 | ---- | M] () -- C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\djrgmt.sys
    [2010/04/23 13:16:00 | 000,014,904 | -HS- | C] () -- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BTTowl0LU5ys

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download AVPTool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan

Click the cog in the upper right
Posted Image

Select down to and including your main drive, once done select the Automatic scan tab and press Start Scan
Posted Image

Allow AVP to delete all infections found
Once it has finished select report tab (last tab)
Select Detected threats report from the left and press Save button
Save it to your desktop and attach to your next post

Now the Analysis

Rerun AVP and select the Manual Disinfection tab and press Start Gathering System Information

On completion click the link to locate the zip file to upload and attach to your next post

Thank you very much.

I will begin that now. Before I saw your reply, I had also ran SUPERAntiSpyware and removed 747 cookies.

Now that I am working with you, I'll be sure to not do anything unless instructed.

Is it OK to be doing this in safe mode, as that seems to be the only stable platform at the moment.

Yes it will work quite well in safe mode.. As for cookies they are of no real consequence and not a threat :)

Intriguing as the analysis looks good too - when you go to normal mode what symptoms do you experience ?

Yeah, this is kind of bizarre.

Alright, when I start up normally. From the moment the desktop background shows up, I timed it. Without touching the mouse or any keys, it loads background services (I assume) for 1 minute, 40 seconds and then reboots. I let it reboot, and almost exactly at 1:40 it rebooted again. I've noticed that background services keep loading onto the task bar right up to 1:40. At about 1:10, a message pops up saying "the system has recovered from a serious error" and offers the option to send or not send the error report. This started happening after I had malwarebytes run and delete a file (as discussed originally). During some of this 1:40 I am able to move the mouse and bring up windows explorer, etc.

I'm not sure what my next step would be besides re-installing windows, which I would really like to not do! :)

thanks!

Lets look at a clean boot to see if we can determine which driver is causing the shutdown

Step 1:

Start the System Configuration Utility

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.

Step 2:

Configure selective startup options

In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. Verify that Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI are checked.
Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Step 3: Log on to Windows

If you are prompted, log on to Windows.
When you receive the following message, click to select the Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start check box, and then click OK.

You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Now we get to the tedious part,:

If windows behaves itself then do the following

Restart MSConfig and select half of the disabled services and reboot

Is the problem still present ?

If Yes then deselect half of the services that you resumed and reboot

If no then select half of the remaining services and reboot

The intention here is to isolate the one service/driver that is causing the problem

That is a really neat diagnostic method! I love learning new things.

Ok... we seem to have the culprit.

The system appears to be completely stable with all services running EXCEPT: "MBAM Service"

Also at this time, Process System.ini and Win.ini are not selected, and there are no startup programs selected.

I look forward to the next instruction!

Since I thought we had almost figured this out, I reconnected internet to the computer I am working on and turned Malwarebytes on for active protection, and about once every 15 seconds it tells me it is blocking access to a potentially malicious website, gives the IP, and says type:outgoing

What does that mean?

This means I will need to use a bigger hammer, now we have an internet connection lets see what this reveals

Download and Install CombofixDownload ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop *
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image

    Posted Image
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I'll be able to do this tonight around dinner time.

3 questions:
1. Should I keep the internet connection on the troubled machine, or just use a thumb drive to transfer?
2. Should I have Malwarebytes run active protection?
3. Should I keep "MBAM Service" turned OFF, and also have Process System.ini and Win.ini not selected?

Thank you!!

Update...

After restarting from last night, it rebooted several times on its own and I received about 7-10 different "serious error" messages from windows. When looking at the details, each was from a different file in the TEMP folder. In addition, the computer would not shut down. I forced it off, and upon restarting it seemed fairly stable so I began your directions.

I ran Combofix as I went to do something else. When I returned, ComboFix was done with its thing and the log was showing. There was also a windows message that said: "Generic Host Process Win32 service has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I rebooted. Things seem to be running faster, and for the 5 minutes I've been sitting here Malwarebytes has not displayed anything about blocking access to a potentially malicious website.

I have attached the log below, and await further instruction! Thank you!
