Right, hello guys.

My netbook's battery died on me a few months back, and I just left it, as it was pretty late at night. I woke up the next morning, and put it on charge. After two hours I opened it back up and started it. It loaded fine, then flashed to a blue screen with writing, then in the space of a second it flicked off. The netbook restarted and went to an error page, that gave me options to:

Launch Startup Repair To Fix this Computer (Reccomended)
Start Windows Normally.

The latter, will just repeat the paragraph above.

The first option will take you through Startup Repair, which will fail. It will then take you to an error page and when I clicked on "Problem Information" it gave me this:

Problem Signature:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 21200655
Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 06: 13
Problem Signature 07: CorruptFile
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

After trying through System Restore, which said it had no restore points when the day before it had, and all the other options, I just gave up. I've even went as far as buying an external disk drive (as its a netbook, no drive.) and putting the recovery disk in. The writing on the front of the disk is:

Driver V12.0E

It is definately a Windows 7 Disk, because it has the Windows 7 Logo near the bottom of the disk.

And at the bottom it has:

SN: 6310500018+999 - Though I think that's the support number.

I think/know that the Startup file is corrupt, and so's the repair file. What should I do? I've tried everything, including Command Prompt, going into EVERY drive the netbook has, and attempting to get it to boot FROM the CD.

Please help! Reply ASAP!

Sounds like a corrupted file system.

Run chkdsk from the Recovery Console
  • Boot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
  • At the "Language" screen hold the "Shift" key and press the F10 key to open a Command Window
  • Type chkdsk /r and press Enter.
Let this run to completion undisturbed. Can take an hour or more.

How would I go about running Chkdsk? I tried running it from Command Prompt, it opened a window in another Command Prompt tab then closed itself, and nothing happened. I then tried entering Chkdsk /r into command prompt and got this:

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

Ideas on how Id go about this? My version of Windows 7 came already installed on the netbook, a "Windows 7 Starter". Please reply.

WHen I enter chkdsk /r from a Command Prompt, this is what I get:

chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

At that point, type Y and press Enter then reboot the computer, chkdsk should run when it reboots.

Except I dont get those lines when I enter Chkdsk /r into Command Prompt.
I just get

"X:\windows\system32>chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock Current drive.
Windows cannot rund isk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

X:\windows\system32>"

That's it, that's all I get.
Suggestions please?

Follow the directions I gave you in my 1st response to your post. Have you tried that?

I have tried all of your steps so far, including the first one. I tried it WITH the disk in it, but ChkDsk FAILS to load when I enter it from CommandPrompt. There is no Check Disk (ChkDsk) Option ON the Recovery Pannel. The Window coming up saying "Press (whatever key) to boot from CD/DVD" Does NOT come up.

I suspect we are looking at this from different points of view. Does your Netbook have a CD/DVD drive? If it does you need to enter BIOS Setup and set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device, or, if the Netbook offers it, press the Fn key it shows to go to the Boot Menu and from there chose the CD/DVD drive to boot from.

I do NOT Have a CD Drive In/On My Netbook. It isn't a laptop, it's a netbook.

I have an EXTERNAL CD/DVD Drive.

Also, I am going to be away from Monday-Friday, so please do not close topic due to my inactivity.

No problem. I'll be here when you get back.

Can you set your Netboook to boot from the external CD/DVD drive? Or does it have a Fn key you can press to bring up the Boot selection menu, from where you can select the external CD/DVD drive?

What is the make and model number of your Netbook? The online Users manual may help figure out what options you have.

Hi there,

I had almost exactly the same problem. I was stuck in a vicious cycle of Startup Repair and seemingly nothing I typed into the command prompt was working for me. I followed all the steps here, but to no avail. My problem was with my netbook which does not have a disc drive, so I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of plugging in external drives and sourcing repair discs etc either. However, I found a quick fix that worked for me, but I expect only time will tell if it is permanent one!

Restart your computer and tap the F8 key before any windows logos appear. This should take you into Safe Mode. There are lots of options here, including 'Repair my Computer', which although I have to say didn't work for me, is probably worth trying first. I'm not an expert, but Safe Mode is designed to be just that, giving you the option to simplify things, and disable specific drivers that are giving you hassle! It was trial and error, with lots of restarts and F8s on my part, but eventually I stopped trying to be fancy and chose a, 'Reboot from last known good configuration' option. That's done the trick for me straight away, but as I say, only time will tell!

Hope this helps someone. To be honest, playing around in the command prompt scared the life out of me, because I had no idea what I was doing and couldn't shake the feeling that I was just going to make things worse! Just wanted to put something on here in case there are people like me, who are hitting that return key with their fingers crossed!
