Not sure if this is spyware related. Both Norton, 18.6.0.29, and Malwarebytes, DB 7466, are both causing this laptop to hang after 1 hour of scanning. Norton history is showing a medium severity error, 'Unauthorized access blocked (Set Regietry Security Key)". It seems like this error coincides with the system hang when running a Norton scan. There are no logs from Malwarebytes. The following is the HiJack This log:

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post the appropriate logs in the Malware Removal forum and wait for help.

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update both in due course.

Now please go to Start(Vista Orb) >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 9.4.4
Java™ 6 Update 26

To do so click once on each of the above to highlight then click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

Temp' Disable Windows Defender:

This is so it will not hinder the Malware Removal process.

  • Launch Windows Defender via Start(Vista Orb), Control Panel, Windows Defender and go to Tools >> Options.
  • There will be a list of configuration options.
  • Scroll down to the end of the list to Administrator options.
  • Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button.
  • Now you will receive a notification saying that Windows Defender is turned off.
  • Click on Save then Close on the Notification that appears.
A graphical tutorial explaining the above can be viewed here.

You may re-enable this when I give the all clear, though personally I would leave it disabled as it is not a particularly effective application and unfortunately it cannot be uninstalled because it is a integral part of the Vista Operating System.

Scan With RKUnHooker:

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now right-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe and select Run as Administrator to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.
Note: You may get this warning it is ok, just ignore it:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • RKUnHooker Log.

Removed Adobe and Java. Windows Defender was already turned off. No performance problems except system is hanging, forcing a hard shut down, when scanning with Norton AV and Malwarebytes. RkU wasn't able to complete the file scan. Received a message 'Getting a list of files & directories (c:\)' but received no further response from RkU. Norton displayed the following message even though I turned off all of Norton's options.
'Norton AV is performing a background task. Full system scan in progress' This the same Norton message I get when doing a Norton scan. Receiving a message that RkU is not responding when I try to cancel it. Here is the RkU report without the file scan.

Hi. :)

No problems. I haven't tried any scans though

OK and thanks for the update...

Next:

Please move the executable for ComboFix to the desktop, it is currently residing here:-

c:\users\Denise\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

Reason being it needs to be on the desktop for the custom script below and for when we actually uninstall the application.

Custom ComboFix-Script:

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
Driver::
178552F9

File::
c:\windows\system32\178552F9.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Dell Webcam Central]

RegLock::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\AllUserSettings]

ReBoot::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.
Posted Image

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Caution: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Note: Remember to right click MBAM and select Run As Administrator.

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform quick scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • ComboFix Log from the Custom Script.
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.

Looking better, got through a Malwarebytes scan. I was getting an error, 'Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion' trying to run Firefox, Malwarebytes after Combofix finished. Restarting cleared the problem. Here are the logs.

Hi. :)

Looking better, got through a Malwarebytes scan

Good.

I was getting an error, 'Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion' trying to run Firefox, Malwarebytes after Combofix finished. Restarting cleared the problem.

OK and thanks for the update.

Thank you for your help so far,

You're most welcome!

Vista Check-Disk:

Please visit this web-page and scroll down to:

METHOD ONE:
Run Check Disk from within the Drive's Properties Page

Then follow the instructions through 1 - 10 and then reboot your computer and let the Check-Disk perform its tasks. This may take some time.

Note: Please make sure you do carry out the above as it is vital!

Vista-System File Checker:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb).
  • Click on All Programs >> Accessories
  • Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.
  • At the Command Prompt C:\Windows\System32> type in the following exactly:
  • CD C:\
  • Then depress the Enter/Return key, then type in the following exactly:
  • sfc /scannow
  • Then depress the Enter/Return key.
Note: This may take awhile to finish. When completed close the Administrator Command Prompt window, via typing Exit then depress the Enter/Return key.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here to run the scan...Click on Scan Now

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Eset Log.

Check disk was clean, no errors. File Checker displayed the following message after verification. It didn't run long, about 5 minutes.

Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

The log file is 11,000 KB. I'm including the end were I believe the error is:

OK, removed registrybooster and installed the new versions of Adobe Reader and Java. Still getting the same message from System File Checker. I used the Reinstallation DVD for Windows Vista that came with the laptop. I understand if this is beyond the topic of removing Malware. Let me know of other sites that can help with this if you cannot continue. The following is the message from the log file:

One final question. What should I do about the infections from the ESET scan? Will Malware Bytes get rid of them?

Hi. :)

Still getting the same message from System File Checker. I used the Reinstallation DVD for Windows Vista that came with the laptop. I understand if this is beyond the topic of removing Malware. Let me know of other sites that can help with this if you cannot continue.

This appears to be a known issuie with Vista, as in SFC is incorrectly reporting tcpmon.ini is corrupted when in fact it is not always the case. The actual file in question is a configuration file used for networking printer's so in most case's it is not used but regardless that not good having a suspect file on a system I think from a security point of view.

My research about this is rather inconclusive unfortunately and there is no actual fix that seems to work apart from either what is known as a Repair Installation(does not appear to be that successful) and or a actual a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows Operating System. Which in your case would be invoking the Recovery Partition and performing a Factory Reset which is defacto the same basically.

However I have a work around for this, I have retrieved a safe clean version of the file from one of my Vista machines that passed the SFC. Which we can use to replace the one on your machine to see if it solves the issue, this however is at your own discretion. For your peace of mind I uploaded the file I retrieved to double-check it is clean and the scan results can be viewed here.

One final question. What should I do about the infections from the ESET scan? Will Malware Bytes get rid of them?

We got rid of one, registrybooster.exe. The other two flagged are known as false positive detections and relate to the Dell DataSafe software you have installed so no action is required. I have already contacted Eset myself about this.

Next:

Let myself know what you wish to do with regard to the corrupted file being flagged by SFC in your next reply, thank you.
