Recently I have been having this severe problem which has prevented me from restoring all of my data. Yesterday I had backed up all my files from vista using windows easy transfer, and then I also made sure to back up my entire user folder just in case easy transfer would fail. All of this data was backed up to a western digital 1tb external hard drive. I did a custom install of windows 7 and was stupid enough to delete my windows.old folder as I felt that restoring from my external hdd would be better. However while using easy transfer the worst possible thing happened as it stopped midway and gave the message "cannot read from soure file or disk try again" (or along those lines). I then tried to manually drag files from the user folder I had backed up but I found that while some files would transfer over, others would not. This is extremely worrying for me as many of those files are of extreme importance and I have already tried right-clicking the drive and using the error-checking tool but it gave no errors. Help would be extremely appreciated.
Edit: To give some additional information, whenever I try to copy the files that give these errors I get extremely slow transfer rates like 14kb/s and eventually the transfer rate just stops and the error message comes up. Some can be opened only on the external hdd albeit after a long waiting time, but cannot be transferred without the message.

Secondly and most importantly, may I apologise for the unacceptable delay in response. We do sometimes experience delys of a few days, purely due to the pressure of the vast number of posts.
However from the 21 August is not acceptable to us and I again apologise.

I would appreciate the following information.

On which type of files does it fail.

Also in view of this

Some can be opened only on the external hdd albeit after a long waiting time

which are these type of files.

Is the external HDD self powered by USB, or with its own power supply.

The new edition of Windows Easy Transfer on Windows 7 should complete the transfer, rather than stopping on the file that cannot be transferred and then report which files could not be transferred.
However this situation, without the update to WET did not exist on Vista and I am not certain if the transfer to the HDD on the Vista using the orignal ET rather than the improved version would then result in the
transfer back from the HDD on Windows 7, failing with that original version hanging on the file that cannot be transferred.

Windows easy transfer isn't much of a concern for me at this point, what I really want to do is just transfer the files from the external hdd manually, but thank you anyway. The files that aren't copying are varied, most of the photos are not copying and strangely several documents and pdf files are not copying while others do. Do you think the hdd is damaged or maybe when backing up originally some files were corrupted? Also very sorry for this late reply.

Select any one of the files on the external hard drive that will not copy.
Will the file open, for example if it is a jpeg image, when you right click and click Open With and then select Microsoft Picture Viewer or whatever you have. - will the image open.

If it will, but for some reason it will NOT copy TRY this

Click once on the file on the external hard drive, to select that file.
Now click the File tab and examine what you have on Send To.

It is likely that you will NOT have where you want to send it.
eg. Pictures.

Open Windows Explorer.
Programs, Accessories.
Paste this into the address bar

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

When that window opens you can then drag and drop the location you wish into the Send To menu


Now reboot and go back to the external drive and see if the Send To slection will work and if the file can then be opened from the C Drive.

This problem is most likely caused by the bad sectors on your hard drive. You can try CBD(Copy Bad Disk) to copy those files on the bad sectors.

use "Long Path Tool" program  its will be useful in solving such issues...
