Change the "D" to "E" and continue as written, right?

D:
cd I396
copy userinit.exe c:\windows\system32
exit

would it look like this?

e:\>cd i386
e:\I386>copy userinit.exe c:\windows\system32

If you are using the actual XP disk the instead of doing the extrafiles you will use the I386 step :)

I typed "exit" it rebooted and it started running windows setup again; got to the "recovery console" and did not know if I was suppose to take the disk out so I took the disk out and rebooted again.....It flashed two screens like it was starting up but then it went to the blinking cursor again.

Now what? I'm not a happy camper :)

Thanks
Lavonda

No problem we can move on to a Repair Installation which should take care of everything.

Repair Installation Instructions

· Insert your Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM and then Restart your computer.

· At the first post screen start tapping the Del key to enter System Bios
· Find the Advance Options or Boot Sequence screen.
· You will need to change the boot sequence so that the CDrom is first and the HD is second.
· Press F10 to Save and Exit and then press Enter to accept.
· The system will now reboot
· When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
· When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER
· To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
· At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. DO NOT SELECT THIS OPTION.

· On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
· Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected and highlighted in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.
· Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

before we continue, i just needed to tell you that the "Boot Sequence" has been in the "CDrom" spot (number 1) since you told me to change it in the very beginning.

Should I have gone back and forth with the hard disk, while doing everything that we've done over the past 3 days.....you didn't tell me to, so I never changed it.

Let me know

No I suggest leaving the cdrom as the first boot device even when we are done. That way you never have to worry abut changing it again. The couple of seconds it adds to bootup is minimal for the peace of mind. :)

It's a copy of Windows XP that a man game me for my desk top when it crashed. It says "Windows XP SP2" on the label. It's been in my cd holder but I looked and it has no scratches on it.

OK that is where the problem may be is that it is a copy and not a original disk. It has been my experience that copies very rarely work and one way is that they may be missing a file like in your case.
