I've done all the scans, and tried to follow directions that worked successfully for others, but sadly to no avail. I am still getting a Norton popup alerting me about system32\rdriv.sys. Norton removed it in safe mode, but sadly my friend as reappeared. Any help would be awesome.. this is driving me crazy!

Here's my log:

Since it's been over five days I think my previous message may have been missed. To update, I am no longer getting rdriv.sys warnings from Norton, but I believe it is still lurking on my computer. I am still having the same computer problems which include: Generic Process for Win32 errors that cut off my internet connection at random, I can't use my IE address bar after a few minutes, and my computer freezes when I try to save/open something using a windows file pop up. good times!

Here is an updated hijack this file..

Welcome to Geeks to Go!
I apologize that we missed your topic.

I will take a look at your log, in the meantime, please go to Start > Control Panel double-click the "Java Plug-in" icon and locate the update button. Download the lastest updates. The version you have now is outdated and more vulnerable.

I also need you to disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware:
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please disable Spywareguard as well because these programs offer great protection which is good until it comes to getting rid of malware - then they interfere.

Wow! Thanks so much for the quick reply! I have disabled my Spyware Guard, shut down/disabled Microsoft Anti-spyware, and updated my Java plugin.

First, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe on the desktop right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\system32\regservices.exe
c:\windows\system32\vscalz.exe
C:\voltage.exe
C:\WINDOWS\voltage.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\voltage.exe
C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Ok" at the "PendingRenameOperation" prompt. If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

After your computer reboots, Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sygate Personal Firewall Port Blocker] voltage.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [regservices.exe] regservices.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qhddpq] c:\windows\system32\vscalz.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [regservices.exe] regservices.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Sygate Personal Firewall Port Blocker] voltage.exe

O16 - DPF: {25365FF3-2746-4230-9DA7-163CCA318309} (GTDownloaderCtrl Class) - http://inst.c-wss.co...ml/gtdownlr.cab

O23 - Service: AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe (file missing)

Post a new HiJackThis log. Then we will fix whatever is left of rdriv.sys

You did delete the files with Killbox first, correct? HiJackThis will only remove them from startup but won't delete the files.

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

AOL Instant Messanger (note the "a" Messanger)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

AIM

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

After reboot, I need you to do this for me:

*Open HijackThis.
*Click on "Open Misc Tools Section"
*Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:

List all minor sections(Full)

and

List Empty Sections(Complete)

Click "Generate StartupList Log".
Click "Yes" at the prompt

It will produce a NotePad Page. I need you to copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here.

Yep.. I used Killbox.. sorry I should have wrote that! I just had to copy & paste each file name into it individually because for some reason it wouldn't let me copy them all from the clipboard at one time.

Here is the startup list report..

StartupList report, 6/8/2005, 2:12:41 AM

Please follow all instructions exactly as specified. I would advise printing them out so you're sure to follow all instructions.

Copy the below instructions (until you get to the purple text). Paste them into notepad and save it for use while in Safe Mode. This is important because it has to be done exactly in order for this to work

I need you to reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

After getting into Safe Mode, Open the notepad you saved earlier.

Go to Start > Run type in:

cmd

Click OK.

A black window will open up.

Copy the below line, exactly, and paste it into the black window:

attrib -h -r -s C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Hit Enter.

When it goes to the next line, copy the below line, exactly, and paste it into the black window:

del C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Hit Enter.

Then type exit

[END OF INSTRUCTIONS TO COPY FOR SAFE MODE]

Reboot into normal mode.

Open Notepad, and copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file. Go up to "File" > "Save As...". A box will open up. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as rdriv.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4

Locate rdriv.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

After the "merged successfully" prompt, please do the following:

Run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qhddpq] c:\windows\system32\vscalz.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Sygate Personal Firewall Port Blocker] voltage.exe

Close HiJackThis.

Now, make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

Download, install, and run CleanUp!

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

How is it running now??

Also, one more thing I would like you to do before I can call this topic resolved.

I need you to go here:
http://www.microsoft.com

Click on "Windows Update" on the left side.
Then click "Express Install" to install all security updates available for XP.
I need you to do this to make sure you can get Service Pack 2 (plus you need it anyway!) because rdriv.sys sets a policy to keep you from downloading it and I want to make sure that is fixed!
Please let me know when it's done or if you have any problems with it.

So far I have no problems and I was able to update to Service Pack 2. Seems like everything has been repaired.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
