My Windows 7 Toshiba Satellite laptop has been infected with this virus.
Norton 360 can not get rid of it.
I have used both tools that Norton suggested to no avail.
I have also tried TDS Killer, Fix TDS, SUPERAntiSpyware.
All with no success.
I do not want to reinstall Windows if I do not have too.
Help please.

hi there lets see first what the variant is

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

THEN

Download aswMBR.exe ( 1.8mb ) to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it Click the "Scan" button to start scan

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

This is not a run of the mill variant. So lets try to narrow it down

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop *

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image

    Posted Image
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Here is the Combo Fix Log.
My computer will blue screen when I try to boot it normally.
I then restart and click on Launch Repair, restore.
It will run for a few minutes and then lock up.
I had to run all the scans you have requested while in Safe Mode.
Let me know what to do next.
Thanks

I can see no sign of the TDL on the logs, when you boot what does the blue screen reference as it crashes i.e. does it give a driver/file name

There is nothing said about a driver. Tells me to check disc space and Vendor for BIOS update. Neither is a problem

OK what we will do now is run Chkdisc from safemode - you will need to schedule it to run on next boot and see if that clears that starting problem

A step by step guide on running Chkdisc is here

Could you confirm that the malware alert is no longer appearing

I have not seen anything that said that the malware is still there.
I am still blue screening at start up and only able to start the computer in safe mode.

Could you have a look in C:\Windows\minidump and upload the latest minidump file from there please (you may have to zip and attach)

Here is the file that you requested.
By the way the computer has booted normally and has not frozen.
I ran a Norton scan and it came up clean.
I'm going to reboot and see what happens.

The failing element was part of Norton idsvix86.sys

On Fri 8/26/2011 7:59:19 PM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\082611-19422-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: idsvix86.sys (IDSvix86+0x5703E)
Bugcheck code: 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFFFFF9445F03E, 0xFFFFFFFF807868F4, 0xFFFFFFFF807864D0)
Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
Bug check description: This indicates that a system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: idsvix86.sys .
Google query: idsvix86.sys SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M

Although it appears to be fixed it would be well worth updating or repairing Norton to ensure that you do not get this again

What are the remaining problems ?

Thank you for the donation 'tis gratefully received

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System
  • Select System
  • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones
  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
Posted Image
Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?

Keep safe
