Following a clean reinstall of XP Pro-SP3 on my Acer One D250 netbook, the sound became severely distorted. Even the Windows system sounds stutter and lag; it is almost impossible to hear anything without a headset even with the volume at max; and my softphone which worked perfectly before the reinstall now produces random flashes of static for both myself and the party I called.

At first I thought I had incorrectly installed the sound driver (Realtek HD Audio v5.10.0.5928_A dated 8/31/2009) so I reformatted and reinstalled the OS again and then systematically installed the drivers in the correct order. All are updated now and everything else works just fine....except the audio. And by the way, What worries me is that my post-reinstall OS-audio-distortion problem appears to be common although solutions are not. So my question is can anyone offer me a fix?

Hi.
Sorry you have waited some three days for a reply.
This occasionally happens purely because of the vast number of threads on this site.
Please go Start, right click My Computer, click Properties, in the window that opens click the hardware tab and then click device manager,
Are there any warnings against any entries.
Then click the View tab and click to check show hidden devices.
Again are there any warnings.

A screenshot may assist if there are.
That is with the appropriate window on the screen, ;press the Prt Scr key.
Now go start, programs, accessories, paint and when that opens click the edit tab and paste.
Then click the File tab and save as. -it defaults to Bitmap which is too large to attach.
In File type select JPEG. Save and then on your reply, Go Advanced and click to attach. Browse to your saved image.

Hello Mac...

Thanks for your reply no matter how late. I can use all the help I can get.

As for your suggestion, checking Device Manager was one of the first things I did ... and found no errors. The next thing I did was update all of my drivers. But that hasn't helped nor has a number of other suggestions such as running a diagnostic scan (PC PitStop) which found no errors even vaguely connected with the audio (and video). So I remain stumped. So if you know of a way to test the soundcard itself, I could at least know whether or not I needed to replace it.

It is as you say unlikely that Pitstop will be of help in this matter.
Have you on Device Manager checked the Hidden Devices.
What else have you done please, as these details will save us both time.

On Control panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, check Volume on first window device volume. On the advanced button on Device volume check that Line In if not used is Muted and that all other settings are correct
Then below that check speaker volume and not muted and there click the advanced tab, ensure you have the correct selection if external speakers are used, click the performance tab, reduce if they are not already there, the sliders for hardware acceleration and sample rate conversion to half scale. On gthe audio tab ensure the default device is shown correctly and that use only default devices is checked.

After each setting retest.
If no success, go start, programs accessories, system tools, system information, click the Tools tab, click Direct X Diagnostic Tool, when that opens click Sound 1 and test, sound 2 and test and music and test.
Does the netbook have a CD player, is a music CD also distorted.. or only MP3 WMA etc stored files distorted.

The mystery grows: I just completed the Direct X Diagnostics in which every test was successful. I got similar results in doing the PC Pitstop Analysis, System Sound Tests, plus deep anti-malware scan, Microsoft FixIt, install K-Lite Mega, Defrag, C-Cleaner with Wipe, DriverMax updating, and analysis of Device Manager with hidden devices revealed. Nothing shows any problem even remotely connected to the audio!

Please understand: I had none of these problems before performing the clean reinstall of the OS. The very first time I rebooted when Windows completed the install and even before I installed the drivers (acquired from the manufacturer's website) was the lag/distortion of the familiar Windows 5-tones boot up sound. And nothing has changed since.

But I did just describe my problem to an IT guy I know and he tells me the distortion is a warning of a failing hard drive...so I'm wondering if that could be the case on my machine that is only 2 years old.

Do you mean the sound played correctly in Direct X pls.

Have you installed the chipset driver from Acer, that should be the first of the drivers installed.

I am reasonably certain, you would have more problems than this if it was a failing hard drive.
However run a chkdsk /r.
That is either on the GUI of My Computer, right click the hard drive, click properties, click tools, click error checking, click check now and click to check BOTH boxes.
Click Start and agree to run on restart.
OR start, run and type cmd, thern on the prompt type chkdsk C: /r - again agree to run on restart.
If you do not see the results, it is a five stage check. Go Control Panel, Event Viewer, Application on left pane and in main window scroll to the Winlogon entry.
Open the entry, check it is the chkdsk results and if you wish. Left click once on the double page symbol to the right of the window, below the up and down arrows.
Then on your reply, right click and paste.

Some further advice.
If you use CCleaner do NOT use the registry cleaner aspect.

Yes, the audio worked perfectly in the DirectX tests...a complete surprise to me. Perhaps you can see why that would be from the following:

I see nothing amiss in chkdsk, just the usual cleaning of minor inconsistencies.
Neither do I see anything amiss in the Direct X

I asked in the last post had you installed the chipset drivers.
These should always be installed after a format and should be the first driver installed.
Here they are - presuming it is the Acer Aspire One D250.

Do this first please. Then if still no good as below

Secondly try the other Audio driver from this link

Affirmative. First thing after reformatting and reinstalling XP-Pro, I install the latest chipset drivers recommended by Intel. However, that was v9.1.1.1015 vs the driver you're recommending v8.3.0.1018 so it appears that I was incorrect. So now I assume that I need to start the process over again from scratch...is that right?

In addition, the Realtek driver currently installed v5.10.0.5928 is newer than the v5.10.0.5798 you pointed to. I understood that it was better to use the most recent drivers but if that's incorrect then would I be better off just sticking with the originals?

By the way, I'm unable to download Realtek Audio as it produces an "unexpected error encountered" message in WinRar. Do you know of another site where I can acquire the correct driver(s) for the Acer One D250?

Although I don't remember making this, I just found this driver report dated 8/8...about 2 weeks after reinstalling the OS when the audio distortion began. It looks like I was using at least a couple incorrect drivers. However, I repeated the reinstall since then and installed what I believed to be the correct & most current ones according to Intel. Looks like I need to go back to step #1 again? What do you think>?

I have just tried that download for the audio driver I had no problem
Go here to the Acer link
http://www.acer.co.u...content/drivers

Select Netbook, Aspire and the model, then please do not forget to set the Operating system.

Select the driver
Download
Save
Right click Open With
Extract all

Generally you should use the latest, but occasionally the latest causes problems becuase of another aspect of the system and an older driver will work.
What you should never do, is to accept drivers from other recommendation. You should always obtain the drivers from the manufactuers site in this case Acer or the component manufacturer if an add-on card.

That principle also applies to the chipset drivers.

Intel and all other manufacturers generally supply parts to the major OEM computer firms ie: Acer that are specifically made for the computer.
This is from the Intel site

Intel provides generic versions of drivers for general purposes. Your computer manufacturer may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to your driver. Intel recommends you contact your computer manufacturer for the latest system specific updates and technical support information.

My recommendation is to download the chipset, graphics, audio and LAN drivers, from ACER. and replace the ones you have downloaded from Intel or accepted from some driver site with those.

Quick question: I have downloaded the drivers (chipset, graphics, audio & LAN) from Acer as you suggested. However, I'm not sure how to "replace" what I have currently. Should I start from scratch with a clean OS install or is there a way to uninstall & replace without having to reinstall all my software?

Sorry I have not responded since Sunday.
Due to unforseen circumstances I have not been online until tonight.

There is NO need to start again.
On the chipset driver, have you downloaded and unpacked. It is a zip file, if so you will have seen the window attached on my image.
You simply follow the instructions on the Readme file
However,in essence it is - close all other applications and click the SetUp icon. - follow the on screen instructions.

You then proceed to the Grahics Audio and Lan.
You may on these go Device Manager and then open the entry for the device by double clicking , and then on the driver tab, select update driver, do not select any option for windows to search - eg, select NO, then NEXT then sellect the adavcned option, install from a list or specific location and then NEXT . then select Do Not search I will choose and then NEXT again, then browse to the location wheere you have saved the extracted file to for the appropriate driver you are delaing with and proceed from there.

Once again my apologies for the late reply.

No need to apologize for the delay Mac. You've stuck with me through this mystery and I'm appreciative of your help. However, I think we've reached the end of the road as far as solving it.

I followed your instructions to the letter and now have all the original drivers from Acer installed; there are no warnings in Device Manager; and my netbook is running just fine...except for the audio (and video as well when played together) which remains distorted as before. The good news is that the audio problems I was having on my softphone are now fixed! So unless you have any more ideas, I believe I'm going to have to replace the [bleep] thing or just use it for other purposes other than media. And if a clean install of the OS is ever required, I will ask an expert to do it.

Thank you so much for your patience...
