Please help.
The first thing I noticed was that the desktop background was replaced with a black background with "Warning! Your Computer is infected!" displayed in the center of the screen. Numerous pop up adds Labeled with http://www.interestsdirs.com. Homepage reset to a page with numerous spyware removal ads. (about:blank).
I went through all the recommended steps on the forum and many files were removed, by problems remain.
I would appreciate any help.

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: DelDomains.inf
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

Open Killbox again. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

Click 'Exit' when done.

Then,
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log for me.

Hi jas564,

Please do the following:

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Then open HijackThis. Click on the button that says "Open the Misc Tools Section" then click the button that says "Delete a file on reboot"

When you click that button, a search window will pop up. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnook.exe and then click "ok" and reboot the computer normally. Then scan for a new HJT log and post it here in a reply

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  
• Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  
• Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
