Hello,

I am having issues with both my PC and my older laptop. I am not sure if it is the same virus that was somehow transmitted via my wireless or not. When I started my PC today AVG came up with a threats found warning. It showed win32 katusha.a and Trojan horse psw.generic9.mgs and Trojan horse psw.generic11.bqna. I tried to do a scan with malware bytes and it kept telling me it was already running and couldn't be accessed. I then went back to avg to try and run a scan and it told me all components were off and wouldn't let me turn it back on. I decided at this point to get old my old laptop and thankfully found this fantastic site! I ran a malware bytes scan on my laptop and it too came up with a trojan horse. This one was identified as trojan horse generic23.cvw and showed the file location as C:\\Windows\svchost.exe Malware says it has quarantined the infection, but I thought it best to run OTL and post the results here to see if someone can advise me if it is actually clean. I am then going to go to my PC and follow the steps of what to do when malware has deactivated your anti-virus, that I found on this site. I will post the update of what is happening with the PC once I am able to get a log. Should I start a new topic for this, as it is a separate computer? In the meantime if someone could take a look at this log from the laptop and let me know what I should do it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Ok, I have now gone back to my PC and followed the instructions using exehelper.com which did not work for me. I then installed Vipre rescue which found the infection and then froze. I unistalled this and installed Super Anti Spyware Portable Scanner. This downloaded, but about 25 seconds in it shut down. I tried several times and it will not run. I have attached the OTL log for the PC. The laptop appears to be ok no. Hopefully someone can have a look at my earlier log for the laptop and confirm this. For the moment, my main concern is the PC. I can't seem to get rid of this thing no matter what I try. I apologize if I was supposed to change the settings for the log and it is too long. Help please! Thank you so much.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me Agent ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together :)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Scanning with GMER

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Posted Image
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

Notes:
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.

Hi Agent ST,

It's a pleasure to meet you as well and thank you for your reply. I have now run Avast on my laptop and it seems to have cleaned out any issues with it. However, the PC desktop (the second log I posted) is another issue. It now will not even let Windows boot normally, in safe mode, or last good configuration. I am at a loss *sigh*. Is there anything I can do at this point to get it to boot and run your suggestions?

Thanks again!

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! What exactly happens when you attempt to boot into Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration? What was the last thing you did on the computer before the issue with the booting occurred?

The last thing I did was to try and install and run Super Anti Spyware Portable. It installed fine and then started to run and shut itself down, so I uninstalled and shut down the computer. Yesterday when I tried to boot up it would hang on the Windows loading screen and then restart. Now it's just the black screen apologizing for Windows not starting successfully and asking me to choose which mode of windows I want to start. I tried selecting the different options and hitting enter, but it's just hanging there. I think I may have to take it in for repair. Hopefully, the hard drive isn't gone. :-(

Okay. Thanks for that information.

Would you happen to have access to a blank CD/DVD? We can try to boot up into an external environment, and try to fix the booting issue there.

If you do have access to a blank CD/DVD and can burn a disc, please try the following:

  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)

  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
  • Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Ok, I downloaded OTLPENET.exe to my desktop on the laptop. When I double-clicked it asked me if I want to run the program. I clicked yes and then it asks if I want to burn to cd. I selected yes and now it just says Extracting 0% and is just sitting there. I had to use the task manager to stop it and try again. It's now doing the same thing again. The cd is in the drive. Any suggestions? Should I try copying the file to the cd by going through my computer, selecting the cd drive, copying it over and choosing write files to cd, or does it have to extract this way in order to work?

hmm.. That's interesting.

Can you try to download a new copy of OTLPENET.exe and see if downloading a new copy of the file fixes the issues you're experiencing with extracting the file.

Ok, so I downloaded a new copy of OTLPENET and it worked this time. Thank you for that. I booted from cd and everything was going great until I went to choose the infected drive. It came up with a message saying the drive was not accessible and then said RunScanner Error - Target is not Windows 2000 or later. I tried a few more times and the latter message came up each time. The message about the drive not being accesible did not come up again. Any further suggestions, or should I just throw it off the deck? hahaha

Did you ensure that these options were selected:
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK

It only got far enough to ask me to select the windows folder of the drive and then gave me the RunScanner Error - Target is not Windows 2000 or later and didn't go any further. Nothing came up about the remote registry, or user profiles. I am going to try it again in a few minutes and see if I can get it to work this time.
