Today I have one coaxial cable jack which I send to my own DVR and on to my standard def TV. I want to buy a new HDTV to replace the standard def TV but I want to keep using the DVR (to record programs and burn DVDs). So can I -- what does it take to -- bring one cable in and watch my HDTV while recording a different channel at the same time.

Just a coaxial splitter. Your cable company sends both signals, and your devices will figure it out. However, splitters do reduce the signal to each device and can result in reduced video quality. On analog this would be "snow" or a fuzzy picture, on digital it would mean pixelation or signal drop-outs.
