Hey there

I am curious if anyone could recommend a good freeware digital audio workstation (DAW) program. I have linux dualbooted on my PC, so either OS is fine.

I am looking for something as simple as possible (more like garageband or fruity loops, than pro tools)... All I want is to be able to plug in a guitar or synth, play a few lines, create a drum beat, and then export it as an .mp3

My PC is a Dell Dimension Intel 4, 3.0 GHz with 2.0 GB Ram, and I have Windows XP SP 3...

I currently have a Lexicon Alpha USB recording console (which functions as a soundcard, as well) (http://www.lexiconpr...roduct.php?id=7)

This unit came with Cubase 4 LE, but I find it a little too cumbersome... all I want to do is make some quick demos, in which I program a drum beat, and then record a synth or guitar line over it.

Any ideas or recommendations would be very appreciated! If no freeware options are possible, please recommend anything...

Thanks

hi there

thanks for the reply!

ive actually used audacity, and while i enjoy its ease of use, i was hoping for a program that had a built in drum sequencer... something simple, just so I can add some simple beats to whatever demos I record...

can you recommend something that can do that? or is it possible to use a dedicated drum sequencer in conjunction with audacity?

thanks!

it looks perfect, but i cannot get it to run... have you used this program? it appears to install correctly, but during the program splash screen, an error message pops up and it closes.

tried rebooting, reinstalling, etc... contacted the developer...

any ideas?

thanks

You could check out LMMS - http://lmms.sourceforge.net/home.php
I haven't tried it myself, but the review it got here(which normally has unbiased reviews, as far as I can tell) is pretty good.

I might add that Audacity is an excellent free audio editor, but I wouldn't really categorize it as a DAW.
