I'm trying to clean up my brothers laptop, running Vista, as he has been complaining recently about it running slowly and locking up pretty frequently. He had an old Sysmantec antivirus on there which I uninstalled and I downloaded Avira. When I try to run a scan with Avira it locks up once it reaches the file, system32/shwebscv.dll. My brother is pretty incompetent when it comes to computers so I don't doubt there a lot of different malware on his computer.

I started down the list of your things to do so I downloaded OTL. When I try to run a quick scan, it freezes once it gets to "Looking for newly created files: C:/Windows/System32/shwebsvc.dll"
