A friend of mine has an old Emachines t1115 (http://www.epinions....isplay_~reviews) and, having got fed up with some XP issues, he asked me to install Linux on it, so I tried to install Ubuntu, but (I'm assuming due to lack of RAM) it wouldn't run (installed, but when starting up it would go to a black screen and never progress from that) so I then tried the alternate Ubuntu install for older computers, and its still extremely slow, especially if we open firefox (and the main thing he wants it to do is go online, mainly for youtube/facebook) is there anything we can do to speed it up aside from upgrading the hardware?

Ubuntu needs much more memory (at least about 512 MB for normal use).

Instead of Ubuntu you should try a lightweight distro like Puppy Linux

If you want something that is usable and lightweight try TinyCore it is a simple interface with good hardware compatibility and practically runs on no resources what so ever. It might be your best bet.

LOL you would probably be able to run a "command line" of linux on 128mb of ram. I run all my Linux server VMs on 256 gb on ram just fine. But if your running all those fancy GUIs, you stand no chance with 128 gb of ram

I think lubuntu is your best bet. Lightweight, not as basic as Pupply Linux. Stable.
