Hi,

I've recently been getting quite a few blue screen crashes on my computer. I'm not too sure what the problem is so I'm hoping someone could help me out here!

After having a look through the forums I have noticed you require the dump files with these sorts of problems so I have provided them here. I apologise for the long list, I realise that the majority of them are related to the "nv4_disp.dll" error but the bug check description is different on some of them so I thought I should post them all. I have also tried updating my graphics card driver but that has not really done much good.

Any help on this matter would really be appreciated!

Welcome to GeekstoGo.

What is the make and model of the computer please if branded.
Please supply the make and full model.

From where did you obtain the Nvidia graphics driver please.

Go Start, right click My Computer, click properties and on the hardware tab click device manager
Are there any warnings posted against any entries please.
If so please provide details.
Whilst there, click the View tab and then click show hidden devices.
Now check again please for warnings - these will be yelow or red marks against the device entry.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

My computer is not branded, it is a custom build and so I cannot provide a make or model.

I obtained the new graphics driver from the Nvidia website.

I also checked the device manager and there are no warnings to be seen anywhere.

Please do this
Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.

and this
Run this please. Send me the url, that is the web address of the results page.
When you are on the results simply copy and paste the address bar.

I want you to run the overdrive test. Please do not download the suggested drivers from the results.
I merely want to see what it says.
Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to "Run as Administrator". After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
RUN the test ANON
That is at the end of the page that opens - when you click the Overdrive test
If you do not wish to create a free user account, you can still run overdrive anonymously

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. We prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Do this please.

1. Uninstall the Nvidia driver
Using THIS procedure.
First, uninstall the NVIDIA drivers (if they are still installed) using Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs . you need to find NVIDIA Drivers and click Uninstall/Change. Make sure the NVIDIA Display Driver checkbox is checked, then click Remove

Then download Driver Sweeper from here
http://phyxion.net/i...er-sweeper.html
Reboot in Safe Mode, not Safe Mode with Networking
and complete the uninstall of all Nvidia graphics drivers.

Reboot normally (not into safe mode), and then, download and install the drivers

Reboot when prompted, and let us know if you still receive the error message.

2. Install this one
http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.html

I just wanted to make sure I get this right before I actually do it incase it messes things up. I have several different NVIDIA listings available to uninstall, should I uninstall all of them? This is what I have:

- NVIDIA Display Control Panel
- NVIDIA Drivers
- NVIDIA Graphics Driver 275.89
- NVIDIA nView 135.85
- NVIDIA Performance Drivers

I have to go offline for a couple of hours so did not want to leave you waiting.

I do not have time to complete an examination of your system as is disclosed on Pitstop.
The answer is YES to Display Control Panel.
Yes to Graphics driver 275.89
YES to Nvidia N View

The other two depend on what other Nvidia hardware is on the computer - you would have to check.

You have this file on the root of your C drive
C:\ Comp 1 FULL with fade.avi 2106.39 MBs
Do you know what it is, as the only reference I can find is from an untrustworthy source with a full red warning count on Web of Trust report, albeit that is for the download source.

The file you mentioned is one I created myself in a video editing program and so I think it should be fine.

I removed the NVIDIA drivers as instructed and re-installed the one you told me to. I haven't had a BSOD yet but I am still having a similar problem that I had before in that my web browsers (Google Chrome and Firefox) have a tendency to freeze and/or crash. Whether this is all related I am not sure.

Well, it may be good news then.
I will wait for your further appraisal re the BSOD in a few days or so after you have tested with intensive graphic operations.

There are a number of matters that require attention

1. Please run these programs in the order shown.
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
Followed by this please.
http://www.atribune....id=25&Itemid=25
Please run ATF Cleaner clicking on the Main tab, and select ALL.
Please ensure that you have any saved passwords for websites email etc, as they will be deleted.
It does NOT effect Windows passwords.
This is an ideal utility to run once a week or so to clean your browser files.
When running regularly do not check PREFETCH as windows will simply rebuild it.
DO CHECK IT THIS TIME PLEASE - by select all.

Then if you use Firefox check that tab and do the same please.

The please reboot and report if situation improved.

I ran these processes this morning as requested. Thought I'd give the computer a few hours to make sure everything is working OK before I replied and it seems as though it is. Should any of the problems re-occur anytime soon then I shall report back but at the moment things seems OK, so a huge thank you for your help!

I am pleased to have helped.
It is more than likely that you will not find out what caused the original error.
Sometimes, especially with some anti-virus programs, although a driver appears to have installed correctly, the files were corrupted or perhaps spoiled is a better word by the anti-virus scanning the download.

Providing I know and can completely trust the source I always disable the anti-virus.

If you do have any problems, as you say, you only have to post back.
We do not close threads on GeekstoGo until they naturally expire, so if you do post on this thread, I will receive a notification, if it is within the next 30 days.
After that you may if you wish send me a PM. NOT to receive help, but to tell me you have posted.

Good luck.
That ATF is a marvellous little program, but note please the advice re the prefetch if you run it regularly - by that I mean every month or so.

TFC is great, written by one of our senior staff at GeekstoGo, but its regular use is not required if you generally invoke good housekeeping.

There are a couple of closing issues revealed on Pitstop I will post on these shortly, they are minor issues.

Once again pleased to have helped.
Good luck with it.

Drive J
J:\ 238414 MBs 14294 MBs 6% Only 6% free space.
If this is only backup data not that vital.
If it is an accessed drive be careful, you are running close to the limit.
If it is a backup drive containing images - never defrag it.

Clear IE Cache Performance 163 MB
Delete Temporary Files Performance 297 MB The above was the reason for the ATF and the TFC - both far too large

System Restore Capacity
C:\ 476929 MB 57231 MB Windows XP Pro SP3 D:\ 476938 MB 57232 MB Windows XP Pro SP3 J:\ 238414 MB 28609 MB Windows XP Pro SP3Far too much. It will allow far too many restore points. If 5% of the drive capacity does not have restore points that serve the purpose of restore, then the teens of restore points that you have will be most unlikely to achieve anything.
Start - right click My Computer, click properties, click the System Restore tab, select the drive and click settings.

Defragmentation
C:\ 476929 MB 33% 5%33% data, 5% file.
Keep your eye on this.
Defrag before it reaches 8% file.

That is all.
Regards.
ONE LAST MATTER I just noticed.
You have AVG 2011.
They offer this

AVG PC Tuneup

Restore your PC to peak performance
Speeds up your PC, cleans your hard drive and eliminates freezing and crashing.

MY ADVICE and I can say that of all staff on GeekstoGo - do NOT ever even consider it.

It is a gimmick - unwanted - not needed and has every chance of doing exactly the opposite to improving performance.

Basically in addition to doing what is accomplished by normal good housekkeping, using XP provided utilities, it is a registry cleaner - STAY well away from them.
