Hotmail sending out spam emails

I recently used JavaRa to update my java and on the same day I got calls from people saying my email (Hotmail) got hacked. My sent folder is filled with spam emails that were sent out to all my contacts. I changed my email password, ran an antivirus check (MSE), found a trojan in the java folder and removed it. That seemed to fix the problem. I changed the password on my email back to the original password, and spam started getting sent out again.

I have changed my password again, but this time an antivirus check did not find any viruses. 'Immunize' on Spybot S&D did notice that my browser (Opera) had *nothing* immunized (typically i always have everything immunized). I fixed that, opened and closed Opera, and tried 'immunize' again. Once again, it showed as Opera having nothing immunuzed. I have unistalled Java from my PC and reinstalled Opera (this time everything seems to have been immunized and STAYED that way).

In case it matters, I always have Hotmail set to 'remember me' and I always use Opera's password manager (Wand) to save all my passwords. UAC is set to never notify on this PC.

Any thoughts on what is happening here? Was the old password just the one that was bad? I'm kinda nervous about even logging into my email from my home computer now (with the new password). I can use the same email from my work PC w/o any issues.

Any help is really appreciated!

Update 9/17: reinstalled Java update 27 from Sun.com and attached new OTL scan results. The extras.txt file is still the original (the second scan didnt give me a file)

Edit: Attaching OTL.txt and Extras.txt from OTL scan instead of pasting them here. This avoid the massive post sizes!
Attached File  OTL.Txt   68.61KB   108 downloads
Attached File  Extras.Txt   45.13KB   113 downloads

<Deleting post (don't see a delete option)>
I attached the OTL scan results (2 files) to my first post instead of copy pasting them.

Hello indraroop and welcome to G2G! :)

My nick is maliprog and I'll will be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTE:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within 3 days or your topic will be closed

Next time copy/paste your logs. It's easier for us to read them.

Step 1

Please don't change your password to old one. Your old password is stolen and they'll always try to use it with your account. Make new password on another, clean, system and never change it back to your old one.

Backdoor Trojan

If this infection is what I think it may be, it is also backdoor trojan. This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer and steal critical system information including passwords.
I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. Also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

Step 2

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Double click on the icon to run it (If running Vista or Windows 7, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them if you need to start a new topic.

Step 3

Download GMER from Here. Note the file's name and save it to your root folder, such as C:.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with this file.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Allow the driver to load if asked.
  • You may be prompted to scan immediately if it detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "No", save the log and post back the results.
  • If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
  • On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
  • When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as Results.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
  • Exit the program and re-enable all active protection when done.

Step 4

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL log
  • GMER log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

Hi indraroop,

We have work to do...

Step 1

Please close all running programs and Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    O3:64bit: - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - Locked - No CLSID value found.
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - Locked - No CLSID value found.
    [2011 09 27 18:12:09 | 000,000,000 | ---- | M] () -- C:\Windows\SysNative\drivers\lvuvc.hs

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyflash]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the fix log it produces in your next reply or you can find it in C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

Step 2

Download Virus Removal Tool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan

Click the cog in the upper right
Posted Image

Select down to and including your main drive, once done select the Automatic scan tab and press Start Scan
Posted Image

Allow Virus Removal Tool to delete all infections found
Once it has finished select report tab (last tab)
Select Detected threads report from the left and press Save button
Save it to your desktop and attach to your next post

Step 3

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL fix log
  • Virus Removal Tool log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

Question on the Kaspersky step that I wanted to confirm - should I not select and scan all my removable drives? I did scan all drives in the prior post (OTL and GMER).

I'll start the OTL and Kaspersky step after I hear back regd the removable drives. I ask b/c I had detected a virus on one removable drive (this was before I started this thread).

Thanks!

You can select all removable drives but the scan will take longer to finish. If you like please select all.

Kaspersky log follows - the scan encountered a bunch of password protected files...

had 2 questions:
1. Can I delete the Kaspersky exe that I downloaded? Do I need to formally uninstall anything?
2. The scan found a virus that a MSE scan didnt (this was before I started the thread) - was just wondering how common is it for 1 antivirus to catch something that another antivirus misses - would you know? Unsure if that is a cause for alarm, so wanted to check

Hi indraroop,

was just wondering how common is it for 1 antivirus to catch something that another antivirus misses - would you know?

Every antivirus has its own malware database. There are differences but you shouldn't worry about it too much. It's just the way things are. They are all fighting to protect our systems.

Your logs and system are clean now. I'm glad we fix up your computer. We need to clean up your PC from programs we used.

Step 1

Please start OTL one more time and click CleanUp button. OTL will restart your system at the end. Remove all other application we used to clean your PC.

General recommendations

Here are some recommendations you should follow to minimize infection risk in the future:

1. Enable Windows Update
  • Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
  • Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them option.
  • Click OK button

2. Delete Temp files

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

3. Make Backups of Important Files

Please read this article Home Computer Data Backup.

4. Regularly update your software

To eliminate design flaws and security vulnerabilities, all software needs to be updated to the latest version or the vendor’s patch installed.

You should download Update Checker from here. The program will automaticly check for newer version of software installed on your system.
