Within minutes of loading and starting to play the Sims 3, my computer freezes for moments and then I get a blue screen of death, stating that an "attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed." My computer then restarts. I've never had this issue before, but about 4 months ago I got the Windows Recovery virus and had to revert back to factory settings, losing everything. I just recently re-installed the Sims 3. I don't know if reverting back to factory settings is actually what caused this, but I figured any background information would help.

I started lurking in Q&A forums and read that it was recommended for a user with a problem similar to mine downloaded WhoCrashed to diagnose his problem. I downloaded it as well and this is the report that it produced:

On Mon 9/19/2011 6:45:04 PM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: dxgkrnl.sys (dxgkrnl+0x8CC26)
Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFFFF854BD008, 0xFFFFFFFF920369B0, 0x0, 0xC)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: DirectX Graphics Kernel
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

Can anyone tell me what my problem is and how to fix it? I'm good with following instructions, but not so good with the translating part. :) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This problem is almost always caused by a faulty graphics card.
