what is the difference between one large file and lots of little files

This is one of things that i have been taught this happens so deal with it but i never really understood why.

the question is say i have 2 2 gigabyte folders
folder 1 had 1 2GB movie and folder 2 has about 15K small texture files from a videogame cache.

why is it that copying the game cache takes about 10 times longer than copying the movie dispite them being the same size. i know it has something do do with the way a harddrive works but thats about it

Because Moving Files happen in clusters
Let's say it's for example we 64bit let's say we have two folders
the first have a File that it's size 256
when it moved or copied it will require a 4 Data transfer on that bus
with allocation data so if we said that a travel on a bus will take 1 second so the time will be 5 second

let's have another folder with 4x64 Bit sized files
it will take 8 seconds to transfer to another location

this example and information isn't completely accurate i just wanted to simplify the idea for you
