I am giving up the vista based HP laptop and want to give it to my stepson. How do I remove all files that are mine and remove vista and add or upgrade to windows 7? Is that possible? I am pretty novice (ish)

Press the power button to start the HP. Press and hold the F11 key during bootup to launch the HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition.

This will return the laptop to factory new settings and any files and programs you had will be deleted.
You will then have to purchase the Win7 upgrade to install it on the laptop.
