Okay, so I'm VERY unintelligent when it comes to computers...
I can see my wallpaper...
Everytime I click on IE I get the startsearches.net page (it's blue), along with an "attention" thingie and then a ton of pop-ups ensue....

Is that what you mean?

First, I need you to disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware because it can and will interfere with cleaning your system. To disable the program:
*Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
*Click on Tools, Settings.
*In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
*Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
*Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
*After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
*Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Then, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe on the desktop right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible. Be sure to use the HiJackThis.exe that you just moved into the folder and not the one in the temporary file!

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

I'm still waiting for the ActiveScan to finish... it's been going for about 45 minutes and I have DSL....

Anyway, when I get on IE there is NO MORE startsearch crap! Thank you sooooooooooo much..... I'll post the result of the ActiveScan in the morning along with the new HijackThis log. Then I'll be sure to visit PayPal.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

Then do this for me:

1. Click Start > Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Java icon (coffee cup) in the control panel. (If it says "Java Plug-in" under the icon please find the update button in the Java control panel. Update your Java, reboot, and then follow these instructions.) Updating your Java will take care of one vulnerability issue and the below instructions are to make sure there are no more Java viruses lurking around.

3. Click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.

There are three options on this window to clear the cache - leave ALL 3 checked.
1. Downloaded Applets
2. Downloaded Applications
3. Other Files

5. Click OK on Delete Files window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

6. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Then, we need to clear startsearches out of Microsoft Anti-Spyware otherwise the program will put them back. Here are the instructions to do that:

Open Antispyware.
In the right upper corner go to Advanced tools
Please click on 'Change restore setting to a new URL'. Change it to something you like to use as your homepage
If prompted for the change, allow it.
Then, when the left hand side is showing a 'good' restore, press 'restore this setting now'.

In steps 3-5 in your last post, I couldn't see anywhere where there were three options (Delete files, view applications, view applets). I went to Tools, then Internet Options, then hit delete files under the temporary internet files section. Did I do this correctly?
Also, when I went to Antispyware, a box automatically popped up when I opened it, asking if my homepage was okay as is (dollymania.net) so I said yes...

Hopefully all is clean now. Thanks so much.

One more quick question: Whenever I restart the computer, MSN messenger automatically pops up and signs me in, though I have it set NOT to do so. It started doing this after I ran all the steps last night. Any thoughts?

We are emptying the files inside the Java control panel not Temporary Internet Files under Tools > Internet Options.
I see your Java updated no problem

1. Click Start > Control Panel.

In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options CHECK: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection CHECK: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After youCHECK these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After you re-enable Microsoft Anti-Spyware, please reboot and post another HijackThis log to make sure it doesn't put anything bad back

You were able to delete the files out of the Java Control Panel without any problems?

Ok, let's make sure Windows Messenger is disabled. Go to Start > All Programs > Online Services, then click "Windows Messenger" go up to "Tools" > "Options", click on the "Preferences" tab, make sure nothing has a check under "General". Let me know if they were checked!

Yes, I was able to delete with no problem, as far as I know.

In the box:
"Allow Windows Messenger to receive link" was checked; the other three were not.
I unchecked it and hit OK.
