I have an internal DVD drive and a USB DVD drive.

Sometime in the past few days both have 'disappeared' from Windows' 7 management of my computer.

The internal CD/DVD is recognized by my BIOS, but nothing shows up in my computer.

I went looking in my registry for upper/lower filter limits but have found nothing so far.

I uninstalled all programs installed over the last few weeks; several reboots, no help.

Any advice?

Thanks...

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
5. Go to Microsoft's site http://support.micro..._drive_problems and follow the steps.
6. Try the guide at this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

Thank's to Broni for the instructions

There was no drive to uninstall.

I had already tried this before posting. I couldn't find any filters, as stated in my OP.

Restart computer.

This looks like it's the same as #2. I do like the registry edit, though. Thanks. And I tried it anyway even though I'd already done #2, hoping it could find filters I couldn't.

I deleted ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 1 (and only those).

Rebooted.

What happens now is that my BIOS continues to boot correctly, but where I should start to see the Windows screen booting up I now see a flashing cursor... that continues to flash indefinitely.

So now windows doesn't boot at all...?

After a bit of work I managed to get my computer booting again.

The ATA devices were re-installed but this did not help.

5. Go to Microsoft's site http://support.micro..._drive_problems and follow the steps.

Completed. Windows says there are no DVD players connected. There is one connected internally via the motherboard, and one connected via usb.

6. Try the guide at this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

This is only the same 'registry filter' instructions that have done nothing; there are no filter settings on my computer.

Then the next big question is does the bios identify the cdrom that is installed internally?

As far as I can tell, yes; which is why I said so in the OP.

The info that scrolls during bios bootup shows a ATAPI CD drive recognized.

When I go into BIOS setup the CD/DVD shows as there, no problem.

FYI neither the usb dvd nor the internal dvd show in windows. It seems unlikely to me that both of those would simultaneously be caused by a BIOS issue...?

Nope not a bios issue but the internal could be a faulty drive. Bios can still read the firmware signaling the identification but the drive itself may not be functional. Taking it out and connecting it to another system to test it will verify if it is working or not.
The USB is a different matter and I will continue with that for now.

Please Go to

1: START and the click on RUN
2: Type in devmgmt.msc
3: Click Enter

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.

Voltages and temps are good but your Device Manager does not even show a CD\Dvd rom drives entry.
Is your internal and IDE or SATA?

OK you can try to connect it to a different SATA port on the motherboard and see if that will work.

So I tried unplugging and replugging into the same port and it works now. FYI I only have two SATA ports available for DVD's.

In the future I would be very hesitant about the 'delete ATA Channel 0/1' advice.

Actually deleting the ATA's has proven to help countless people in the past along with the other suggestions we use.
Normally when none of them work then the drive itself is the culprit.
Deleting the ATA's and rebooting only allows the OS to reinstall them on the next boot which corrects any fault with the driver for those controllers.
