Is it a 32 or a 64 bit system?

Thanks for the help, but when I tapped F8 nothing happens. My computer just beeps. I've tried the original Windows 7 disc but nothing pops up, I hear my computer reading the disc, but nothing shows up on the screen. The only thing that shows up is a black screen with the blinking cursor to the top left corner of my computer.
Thanks again for your help

Are you able to see the BIOS splash logo at startup? -or- The beep just comes up after just turning the computer ON? How many beeps? Are they long or short beeps, or a combination of both? The number of beeps and their lengths do mean something.
Most problems are due to bad memory modules. Check your memory modules. The Acer Aspire 5517 comes with two modules. Open the RAM memory compartment and swap the modules. You can also check one module at a time.
