This is my first post, however, I am somewhat computer savvy so I am confident you fine people will be able to walk me through this easily.

I have completed every step in the process on the page the website provides for beginners and that it asks that we complete.

Below are the logs for both ewido and Hijackthis (the latter run in safemode)

Also, located immediatly under C:\ are a number of what appear to be executables and I do not know how they got there-- TITLED (and separated by commas): aimfix, head891238, hey, lanman, spread, tmp, winsy, un

Hi Mickl, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [strmsnnrs] msnmcgrs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Services Hosts] svhosts.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti-Virus Update Scheduler V1.39.12R] C:\lanman.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti-Virus Update Scheduler V1.39.13R] C:\head891238.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [strmsnnrs] msnmcgrs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Services Hosts] svhosts.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [strmsnnrs] msnmcgrs.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Services Hosts] svhosts.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Windows Services Hosts] svhosts.exe
O23 - Service: Workstation Service Library (Microsoft Locator Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\wkssvc.exe (file missing)

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and DELETE them (if they are present):

msnmcgrs.exe
svhosts.exe-------Watch the spelling
C:\lanman.exe
C:\head891238.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wkssvc.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanx for the quick response Trevuren, give me 5 and I will be back with those steps completed. Quick question though, where will "msnmcgrs.exe and svhosts.exe" be located, you didn't provide a path. Or should I just search for them in the search tool?

Where there is no search path provided, I recommend you use the Windows Seach Engine.

No need to hurry, I am going to bed.

Well we still have some bad stuff, so we will have to go the longer route

Time to get rid of a bad running service
:

1. First to get rid of a very malicious 023 item (Running Service)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Service: Workstation Service Library (Microsoft Locator Service)

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. Now we need to work from the Command Prompt

Go Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt

. A black box will appear with a flashing cursor. At the cursor, type cd.. then cd.. again and repeat the procedure until the writing preceeding the cursor says C:\>

. Now carefully type the following: sc delete Microsoft Locator Service.

. Press ENTER.

.Close the Command Prompt box

4. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following folder, if it exists:

C:\WINDOWS\wkssvc.exe

6. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

7. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

OK, I completed the above steps, however, when I was in the command prompt and typed what you wanted me to, I got this error/response:

"[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060:

The Specified Service does not exist as an installed service"

I dont know if that was what it was supposed to say or not, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Also, wkssvc.exe was not located in C:\Windows (just wanted to mention that also) so I had nothing to delete

1.We now have to disable 2 more services.

A. Go to START>>RUN and type services.msc > o.k
.A window will appear titled "Services".

B. .Scroll down the list of services on the right and find the one that corresponds to [strmsnnrs] msnmcgrs.exe

C. Highlight the service and choose STOP from the 2 choices that appear under the heading Service Local.

D. Now do the same with [Windows Services Hosts] svhosts.exe

E. Exit this window .
----------------------------------------
2. Now run HJT, SCan and place a checkmark beside the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [strmsnnrs] msnmcgrs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Services Hosts] svhosts.exe

With all windows closed, click Fix checked and EXIT HJT.

No, they do not show up under the task manager, but if I remember correctly, I used to see the msnmcgrs show up there if not all the time, on occasion... the svhost i cannot be sure if it used to or not, since it is so close to svchost, i may have been seeing that.... but to answer the question, they ARE NOT listed in task manager at the moment
