Greetings,

My PC (w/Windows 7 - 64 bit) recently succumbed to a nasty case of the Olmarik.AVQ virus, and so far I've been unable to eliminate it. ESET has been successful in blocking it's redirect attempts, but it doesn't even detect it when I run a scan. Spybot S&D has also proved useless.

After doing a little research on this nasty bugger, I discovered that ESET offers a removal tool on their website...but, unfortunately, they don't have a version that's compatible with Windows 7 yet. I also saw several posts that suggested downloading and running Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware program, so I did. And while it detected, and subsequently removed a virus (or a piece of one), I'm still getting pop-ups from ESET regarding failed attempts at redirection on a regular basis.

This here is my MBAM log:

I also ran HijackThis, and successfully deleted a fishy entry (F2 Reg:system.ini. UserInit-userinit.exe), but the problem persists. This here is my HijackThis log:

I should also mention that this cyber beast has disabled Windows Firewall.

I realize that I'll probably need to run ComboFix, but I'll certainly need some expert advice before doing so (including instructions on how to ESET NOD32 off in Safe Mode).

Please help!!

Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:

  • please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear
  • all logs/reports, etc. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In Notepad click Format, uncheck Word wrap if it is checked
  • if you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
  • the fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!

IMPORTANT:

Please DO NOT install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

=============================================================

The F2 entry is legitimate. I would strongly advise you not to try to fix problems using these tools when you are not trained in their use.

That said, I’m checking your log and will reply with instructions shortly. :)

Hello again Sardonicus

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply

Run aswMBR

  • download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop
  • double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • click the "Scan" button to start the scan

Also, the decision to delete the userinit.exe entry was made after much research that was bolstered by the fact that I had never seen it in prior HJT logs. Moreover, HJT could not provide any info on it (the info box wouldn't even open). Additionally, I read that HJT would not actually delete this entry, so I figured it was worth a shot. Userinit.exe is still on my PC, and I haven't had any difficulty starting up or logging off, so I'm curious as to what exactly it was that was "fixed" if it was not, in fact, a trojan. Thoughts?

I just edited that last post with new logs as I forgot to turn off the recently acquired Malwarebyte's program during the first scan. D'oh!

I realize that I'll probably need to run ComboFix, but I'll certainly need some expert advice before doing so

It appears you have already downloaded it, but in the wrong place.

the decision to delete the userinit.exe entry was made after much research that was bolstered by the fact that I had never seen it in prior HJT logs

– “much research” is not a reliable source of expertise unless it is under the direction of an expert.

Windows XP, Vista & 7 are all completely different animals and behave differently. If they were reliable forums you would not have seen HijackThis used as a primary diagnostic tool on Windows 7, especially 64-bit as it gives no reliable information, being unable to read that operating system.

I appreciate that you are keen to clean up your computer but we run different diagnostic and cleaning tools for different infections and we also run them in a certain order. This is why we say “don’t download or run any tools while we are helping you.

===============================================

There are some indications that you had infections on your system but although there are remnants left, there is no outright bad entry in the current logs.

I’d like to look at some folders that look a bit strange, some of which may be updates but first I think we will indeed run ComboFix as you thought we might have to.

===============================================

Please delete the copy of ComboFix that you have at C:\ComboFix

Download and run ComboFix

Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • when finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

Thanks

Not sure if it's an issue, but ESET and MBAM started up upon reboot when ComboFix was producing the report. I disabled the real time protection as quickly as I could, however.

So far, so good. Windows Firewall is up and running, and I have yet to receive any blocked redirect notifications from ESET. As you mentioned, however, a lack of symptoms doesn't necessarily reflect a cure, so I'll wait for your signal to celebrate.

Log looks pretty much OK so hopefully we can celebrate soon. :)

Let’s update Java and run another Mbam scan

Uninstall and update Java

The version you have is old and therefore vulnerable to infections.

1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
2. In Large or Small icon view, click Programs and Features. If you're using Category view, under "Programs", click Uninstall a program.
3. Select all versions of Java, and click Uninstall. Alternatively, right-click the program and select Uninstall.
Install Version 6 Update 27 , from here

===================================================

Run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Please update it, run a scan and send the results.

===================================================

Run Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please send with your next post:

Mbam.txt
Checkup.txt

Thanks

The results are in, and they look prettay, prettay, prettay good.

I agree, you’ve done a good job. :)

An online scan should verify our thoughts and then we can tidy up.

Run ESET Online Scan

I realise that you have Eset installed on your computer but an online version ensures that it has not been corrupted by infections hiding somewhere inside Windows files.

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan

1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

Looks like I'm in the clear, Satchfan!

The ESET online scanner came up empty-handed.

Hi Sardonicus

Those magic words that you have been hoping for - your computer appears to be clean. :)

Now that you’re free from malware, as long as your computer seems to be running well, please follow these steps to tidy up you computer and decrease the likelihood of getting infected again:

Uninstall Combofix

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix
  • click START then RUN
  • now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

  • please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • once it's finished uninstalling itself you will receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully.

Update and run Malwarebytes. This really is an excellent program that you should update and run on a regular basis, probably weekly.

It’s important to keep programs up to date so that malware doesn't exploit any old security flaws.

FileHippo Update Checker is an extremely helpful program that will tell you which of your programs need to be updated.
