Getting ne cable internet

I live in so cal and want to hire cable internet because its the only thing i can get but the problem is that we get free cable (the person that use to live here hooked it up I guess) we dont use cause we have direct tv but its still connected to the main line and it runs into the house. What will the cable guy do just cut it or what?
