I am afraid yo say that although the problem does not seem to be so frequent or last so long it still happens, occasionally the mouse pointer will take on a life of its own and jump about the screen opening random programs from start, pehaps as you suggested it is a hardware problem and this com is beyond help?

It can be also software problem. Computer is 10 years old so anything can be possible here. I would go with fresh Windows XP install. Do you have Windows XP installation CD?
