Hello all and thanks for any help you can give.
I have a Gateway unit intel(pentium R) D cpu 2.80 GHz
2 gig ram
OS is XP home.
I had some problems reformating a few weeks ago after a virus,I
gave the computer to a friend to do the job.
For what ever reason he installed a bootleg OS.
I decided no big deal I will use my disc and reinstall a legal copy with ligit
serial code.
At the first restart, windows splash screen came up with the option
for bios or boot order, then went to black screen with flashing curser in lower left.
I can not get into safe mode,I did check the boot order,it is correct.
I am lost at this point.
This is the exact problem I was having when I sent it out for repair.
All help appreciated.

The first restart is after text mode setup copies over files. There is no Windows splash screen at this point. I'm sorry, my memory betrayed me. There is indeed a splash screen after text mode.

What restart are you referring to? How far through setup did you get?

I was not paying attention as to where I was, everything apeared to
be working fine,so I turned my attention to something else, while still watching
what was hapening.
I noticed the screen that said the computer was going to reboot,it then started the reboot, but never got past the windows splash screen when it came back up,I waited atleast 10 minutes before I did anything hopeing it would continue.
I removed the disc then re inserted it to try again, the computer now boots to the splash screen then the blackscreen with the flashing curser.
I just noticed on the box that the windows disc came in that it says,
for PCs with windows 95 or earlier'or PCs without windows.
Surley that would not be the problem??????

I would boot off the disk and start setup again. Make sure to format.

Is the disk from Gateway or Microsoft?

Th disc is microsoft.
I cannot boot from it,when I try it goes to the windows splash screen with the
option to go to bios or boot sequence, then it goes to a bls=ack screen with flashing curser in lower right screen.

If it wont boot off the CD then how did you get this before...

That sounds like part of Windows setup.

Can you boot off it on the computer you are using now? This will help determine if its a bad/dirty/scratched disk or your CD-ROM.

What happens if you go to boot sequence and choose boot from CD?

Th disc is microsoft.

Are you sure. Does it have a hologram like this..

Do you have a camera or phone that you could take a picture of the box and CD and upload it here?

I have been in both bios and boot sequence options and checked to be sure I am set to boot from cd.
I also just tryed to boot from a diferent drive after setting it as primary, same problem.
The disc is for sure as you posted.
I purchased this disc myself from Frys a couple years ago, used it twice, each time returning it to the original box.The disc is clean and unscratched.
I will see if I can figure out how to post a photo for you, need first to find my card adapter for to fit the camere card to the computer.
I don,t think I mentioned that I am able to boot with the hirens boot disc,it is slow to do so, but it finaly comes up.Now let me say that I haven't a clue what to do with the Hiren disc once I get it booted

I am sitting here trying diferent things, and realized that I mistakenly said that the computer booted to the windows splash screen.
It does not.
It boots to the gateway screen then goes to black screen with flashing curser.

Now I am getting a message on screen that says:
A problem has been detcted and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
if this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
If this screen appears again, follow these eteps:

Check for virusus on youre computer.remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controlers.
Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruptio, and then restart your computer.
Tec Info:
STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF78D2524,00000034,0X00000000,0X00000000)

OK I will boot back up with hiren boot disc and check for viruses, and see if I can figure out how to run the CHKDSK/F from there also.

I am still listning for advice or opinions.
Thanks,
Don
