My gateway laptop model solo 5150 came with an Win XP professional OS, but the original specs was for it to run on Win 98. I want to re-install the Win 98 SE so it would run faster, what are the steps to do it? Any tips? Thanks

Hello and welcome to Geeks to Go! :tazz: I'm kool808.

Would like to clean sweep it, erase everything then re-install your new Win 98 OS? Or do you want it just downgraded? Are there any important files on it?

You need to have a Win 98 installer disk, and/or startup disk. You may also get the startup floppy at BootDisk.

You will need a Win98SE or WinME boot floppy to do this.. You can get one HERE

Download the self-extracting file to your system.. Then , put a clean, preferably new, floppy into the a: drive.. Double-click the download to install the necessary files on the floppy..

Now, make sure the first boot option is set for a: drive (floppy) and using the floppy, boot the system..

Once you get to a:> prompt, type in fdisk and press <enter> You should get about 4 options.. Use the option that states "Remove all NON-DOS Partitions" (This will be the XP partition if it was formatted NTFS).. Once that is done, use the option to remove all Partition or the Primary DOS partition (there may or may not be one).. Once done, reboot (leave the floppy in)

Once you are back at a:> prompt, go back into fdisk and use the option to create a Primary DOS Partition.. Say "Yes" to all questions.. Once the partition has been created, reboot (leave the floppy in).. When you get to a:>prompt this time, type in format c: and press enter.. Once again, say yes to all question..

Once formatting has finished, reboot with the floppy still in.. use the option to Start WITH cd-rom support.. Once it hits a:> prompt, put your 98 cd into the cd-rom drive, change the drive to the cd-rom (this may be one letter higher than normal) and type in setup.. press enter and away you go!!
