Hi

n the last few days, I've suddenly noticed my broadband usage has shot up. I used a broadband meter (tbbmeter) to see what was going on, and found that upon startup, the meter showed I was sometimes downloading up to 8MB a second even when I was doing absolutely nothing at all. This happened both on wireless and landline connections, and by disconnecting a cable and reconnecting a few minutes later, I could stop it, but then sometimes after a while it starts heavy "downloading" again. Is this normal? I'm concerned as to what is going on here. It happens on a regular basis when I turn on the laptop and I suspect there is skullduggery afoot! I am using Windows 7 and always have Windows Firewall on. I also use Avast Anti-Virus.

Hello Spector437 and welcome to my office here at G2G! :)

My nick is maliprog and I'll be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTE:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within 3 days or your topic will be closed

If this is caused by malware we'll find it.

Step 1

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Double click on the icon to run it (If running Vista or Windows 7, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator"). Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan/Fixes box paste this in

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them if you need to start a new topic.

Step 2

Download GMER from Here. Note the file's name and save it to your root folder, such as C:.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with this file.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Allow the driver to load if asked.
  • You may be prompted to scan immediately if it detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "No", save the log and post back the results.
  • If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
  • On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
  • When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as Results.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
  • Exit the program and re-enable all active protection when done.

Step 3

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL log
  • OTL Extras log
  • GMER log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post using "Add Reply" button

Hi

Step 1 didn't complete. First of all, the OTL link given in Step 1 just goes to an about:blank page and nothing happens. I downloaded OTL separately from the Geeks To Go page that had it. I ran it and added the custom fix before pressing Quick Scan, but I only got the OTL.txt file, not the extras.txt file. I've used OTL before a long time ago and I didn't have any problem then, but this time, I don't know what went wrong. Should I do a quick scan again?

That's OK. Post OTL log you have now. Do GMER scan after this and post log.

The GMER log is just a blank page - it produced absolutely nothing, so there is no need to post it. Unfortunately, I couldn't download GMER to my C drive as I didn't have administrator permission. I downloaded it to the desktop then moved it into the C drive before running it. I hope this didn't affect the end result. Also, the "rootkit/malware" tab on GMER has all the options from 'System' to 'Libraries' greyed out. Only 'Services', Registry','Files' and 'ADS' are ticked, as well as the C drive option. Again, I don't know if this matters. It's a pity that in both the OTL and GMER scans, I couldn't follow the instructions literally. The OTL log is attached; sorry I couldn't produce more than that.

I couldn't finish it because it took too long! I started the virus scan at 10:45 and it was still running three hours later when I had to go to work! Here is the log of file of deletions made in those 3 hours - I see one of them was a trojan.

Any changes after VRT scan? Let's see another two scans.

Step 1

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Check the boxes beside:

    • Verify Driver Digital Signature
    • Detect TDLFS file system
  • then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
  • Ensure Cure is selected for malicious objects

    Posted Image
  • Click Continue then Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

Step 2

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post aswMBR.txt in your next reply
  • Also, ZIP MBR.dat it creates and attach it to your next reply

Step 3

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • TDSSKiller log
  • aswMBR log

It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post using "Add Reply" button

Hi

Just an update - I've only just fully finished the Kaspersky scan - quite a long one, but there were no further threats detected. I will try the other scans tomorrow. I just can't do it tonight I'm afraid due to the time constraints, but I promise I'll give you an update tomorrow :)

Now here's the other two for aswMBR:

The downloading problem still occurs, but I'm beginning to think there is a program on my PC that is not necessarily a virus which is responsible for what is happening. It does at the moment seem to be happening less than before though. I need to do a couple more tests to see what happens.

Still downloading as before when I startup the computer. If my PC is downloading at 200-400KiB/s for up to ten minutes, there must be a way of finding out what application on the PC is actually doing the downloading. Could you give me a suggestion as to how I can find out?

I don't see any malware on your system. Let's try to find application that do this.

Please click on Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and press Apply button.
Restart your system now
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

If this solves problem then we must find specific application
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

I followed your advice to find the application responsible. I have found it! :)

After some trial and error, I narrowed it down. A dreadful piece of bloatware is to blame for this problem: Microsoft BING. It's an add on toolbar for IE, and I don't even use IE! It was downloading updates every time I turned on the PC for no end purpose. Horrific, but I have now uninstalled it and the downloading has stopped completely! Going to work soon, but I'll be donating when I get back- thanks for your help

Glad to hear that! Thank you for considering donation. I really appreciate it.

Your logs and system are clean now. I'm glad we fix up your computer. We need to clean up your PC from programs we used.

Step 1

Please start OTL one more time and click CleanUp button.

Remove all other application we used to clean your PC.

General recommendations

Here are some recommendations you should follow to minimize infection risk in the future:

1. Delete Temp files

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

2. Make Backups of Important Files

Please read this article Home Computer Data Backup.

3. Regularly update your software

To eliminate design flaws and security vulnerabilities, all software needs to be updated to the latest version or the vendor’s patch installed.

You should download Update Checker from here. The program will automaticly check for newer version of software installed on your system.
