Hi,

My computer has been running so slowly--especially the internet (explorer). We have cable internet, so something seems to be wrong. We did run the hijack spyware thingy, but had no idea what we were looking for. Any suggestions?

Well, my computer ate the first thing on that list. I can't remember the name of it now. It just stopped running and then I got one of those "unresponsive program" messages from Windows. Was that a very important program, or will one of the others do?
(I can barely use this website, my computer takes so long to load the page!)

Okay, I think I just need to pay someone to look at this. It's too hard. I installed AVG, but it's been running for an hour and a half and it won't stop. It found a virus, Purity something, and it won't do anything about it. I can't even click out of the program. It just stays on the screen.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Here's my hijack log. I'm sorry I'm so clueless (and impatient) about all this. I tried to help myself first, but I think I just screwed it all up. The firewall confuses me: it asks me to "allow" or "deny" things, but I have no idea if they're good or bad--I probably let in all sorts of viruses.

First of all it looks as though you have multiple firewalls installed (Sygate/Zone Alarm). It's recommended you only run one firewall at a time, as they can cause conflicts. Same with Antivirus programs--only one installed at a time. Mulitiple versions will provide less protection, not more.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

Reboot your PC.
