After the ipconfig /renew I got an error - error occurred while releasing interface Loopback-Interface 1 : the system cannot find the file specified.

The only ip address given in the ipconfig /all is IPv4 address 192.168.0.1

It appears the machine has communication between the router and it, as my wireless connection status shows activity under both sent and received. No programs relying on that connection are working however.

I also uninstalled my Network Magic program, and reinstalled it, but I get the same result:

The platform Service is not running. Restarting the platform service does not work

Thanks for your help on this, I do appreciate it! Hope I am not overwhelming you.

1. Click "Start," click "Settings" click "Network Connections,"
2. Right-click the network connection that you want to configure (the one you use to connect to the Internet), and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab (for a local area connection), or the Networking tab (for all other connections), click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", and then click "Properties."

4. Click "Use the following DNS server addresses," and then type 8.8.8.8 in the Preferred DNS server and 4.2.2.1 in the Alternate DNS server boxes.

5. Click "OK"

Reboot and test.

Open a Command Prompt as before and type:

nslookup att.com

Does it work?

Can you point your browser at 192.168.0.1
Does that work?

If not it's acting like a firewall is stopping us. I think Symantec has its own firewall. You may need to uninstall it.

the nslookup worked okay, but nothing else. I cannot connect to 192.168.0.1

I do not have Symantec installed. I uninstalled it this morning prior to any of what we have done just to make sure there were no conflicts.

Have you tried connecting to 192.168.0.1 in both IE and FF?

Find the IE icon on your desktop and right click. There should be an option to Start without Add-ons. Try that.

In IE, Files, uncheck Work Offline. Restart IE and test. If still no good:

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, then uncheck all boxes and OK. Close IE and restart IE.

In FireFox, (Tools or the Firefox button), Options, Advanced, Settings, check No Proxy then OK. Close Firefox and restart Firefox.

In Control Panel, Windows Updates. Does that connect?

Can you connect with FTP?

Open a command prompt as before and type:

ftp ftp.freshrpms.net

You should get:
Connected to ie.freshrpms.net.

okay....Windows downloaded an update and installed it (didnt mean to let the install part happen)

FF was already not going through a proxy, but have tried it different ways.

IE will not even open. It tries then quickly shuts down.

Seamonkey opens, but will not connect.

FTP through the command prompt works fine, although any other FTP programs I have will not work.

Try this:

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc /scannow

(SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files. If it asks for a CD and you don't have one or it doesn't like your CD just tell it to SKIP.)

Also right click on the IE icon and select Properties. Then Advanced then Reset.

You might also try Safe Mode with networking.

You might try downloading Opera via FTP:

ftp ftp.opera.com
Connected to get2.opera.com.
220 (vsFTPd 2.0.7)
User (get2.opera.com:(none)): anonymous
331 Please specify the password.
Password: any
230 Login successful.

ftp> cd pub/opera/win/1151/us
250 Directory successfully changed.

ftp> ls
(Here you may get a windows prompt that it has blocked the program. Tell it to unblock)
Opera_1151_int_Setup.exe

ftp> binary
200 Switching to Binary mode.

ftp> get Opera_1151_int_Setup.exe
200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV.
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for Opera_1151_int_Setup.exe (10307952 b
ytes).

(It will take it some time to download the file. There is no indication that anything is happening but if you go to Task Manager and look at the network traffic you will see that it is working.)

226 File send OK.
ftp: 10307952 bytes received in 119.73Seconds 86.09Kbytes/sec.
ftp> bye
221 Goodbye.

Now is the tricky part. Have to find where it got stored. Do a search of the C:\ for Opera and it should show up. Right click on it and Open File Location then right click on the the file and Run As Administrator. It installs very quickly. See if it will go anywhere like to att.com
