The day before yesterday I began having problems with the computer freezing and becoming unresponsive to any mouse clicks, keyboard entries or to bringing up Taskmaster with ctrl/alt/delete. As far as I can remember it was a mouse click that started the problems. Last night when this last happened (I was using an older version of AutoCad) I left the machine running and went to bed hoping it would clear itself up. This morning I found a dark blue DOS screen with white letters. At the top was Kernel_stack_inpage_error. Below that was, among other things, "Check to make sure any new hardward or software is properly installed." The tech info at the bottom of the screen was stop: 0x00000077 (0xC0000185, 0xc0000185, 0x00000000, 0x048870000)

I have not installed any hardward recently. I did have a problem with my DVD drive some time back which was remedied by pushing the power cable to the drive back in all the way. Also, a few weeks ago I tried to boot this computer off a had disk from another computer which was having problems. This computer did not boot, I reconnected the original hard drive and the computer has been working since.

My mouse is a Microsoft IntelliPoint 6.1. Yesterday I did a complete system scan with PCTools Spyware Doctor With Antivirus with no problems discovered. I don't know what to do next and I thank you for considering this problem. I will appreciate any help that is forthcoming.

Thanks very much for your reply. As it turns out I have a Seagate hard drive and a bootable Seagate diagnostic CD for it. Since your comments I have run the short test which revealed no problems. Now that I can get off the computer for a while I'll run the long test and see what that turns up. Will that be sufficient or would you suggest I go by your first comments and also run the diagnostic tool you recommend?

Perhaps this is unrelated, but apparently I am still having intermittent problems with my DVD/CD drive. It would not open for the Seagate CD until I wiggled the power cable at the connection to the drive. It would open slightly per wiggle until finally fully open. Could that be a factor? Now it seems to be working, well enough to run the diagnostic CD at least.

Your cdrom problem may be related but I think it is more a coincidence that it is happening now.
A easy way to tell is to disconnect the cdrom and boot the system to see if the issue continues or resolves. Either way we will have a answer to that part.
Once done with the hd diagnostics then I would like to test your memory to make sure it is ok.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:



8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:



10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.


The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:




It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Thanks for your latest reply. I have not had a chance to get to that yet as I have just come home for the night. At any rate another player has entered the game.

Earlier when I tried to shut the machine down and came back after a few minutes there was another dark blue screen with a different message. This time it said...

"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated."

Then there is some discussion about insuring that components have been installed correctly and suggestions that I remove newly installed hardware. Then...

"Technical information:

Actually this has occured before and always at shutdown. It has happened infrequently and the last time was a while back which is probably why I failed to mention it in my first post.

I will continue to check out the memory as suggested and await a reply to the lastest problem to see if I need to be directed in another direction.

One of the many processes or threads crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. As a result, the system can no longer function. Specific causes are many, and often best resolved by a careful history of the problem and the circumstances of the error message. This could be a indication of the memory or a possible corrupted OS.
We will check that with a chkdsk /r and a SFC once you have completed the HD and Memtest diagnostics steps.

I know I am resurrecting an old thread here but I wanted to respond in a way that would maintain continuity with what has gone before. Also I wanted to apolgize for my rather bad form in not responding to your last response (2+ months ago!) and for not thanking you for your help to this point.

The problem here is that the freezing issue only comes up rarely. I followed your advice for checking the memory by removing one of the chips (I have 2 x 2G). The computer booted and ran with no problems for more a little more than 3 weeks until it froze again. Then it ran without a problem for another week or so. At that time I replaced the chip I removed and removed the one that I left in. The computer has been running with no problems since that time with the exception of the occassional dark blue screen with error messages when I shut down as noted above.

I did run the complete Seagate diagnostic for my hard drive with no problems noted.

Thank you for your very complete instructions regarding downloading and using memtest. I haven't done this yet as you suggested using the swapping out of memory chips before I tried memtest. Should I proceed with that now?

When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

One of the many processes or threads crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. As a result, the system can no longer function. Specific causes are many, and often best resolved by a careful history of the problem and the circumstances of the error message. One user, who experienced this on return from Standby mode on Win XP SP2, found the cause was that Windows was installed on a slave drive; compare KB

OK this one is going to be a head scratcher for a bit.

Go to

Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Reboot after your done running chkdsk /r...
then Go to Start...Run and type: eventvwr.msc press Enter
When Event Viewer opens, click on Applications... then scroll down to [b]Winlogon]/b] and double-click on it. This is the log created after running Checkdisk...copy and paste the log back here

Looks right now. IS it still freezing?

As I mentioned in my first post yesterday (you might want to go up and review it) the freezing problem comes up only occasionally and it has been awhile since it has done so. A more common problem, although it is not much of an issue, is the dark blue screen on shut down. And as a matter of fact it did that again last night when I shut down after my last chkdsk /r and report to you.
