If you have valuable things on there you should have been backing up to a separate physical disk.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228888 Seems like it's a problem with the NTFS file system.

You say you have no disk. Does the computer come with a recovery partition?

Please download ARCDC from Artellos.com.
  • Double click ARCDC.exe
  • Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. Please pick: Windows Professional SP2 & SP3
  • You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
  • You will see a few dos screens flash by, this is normal.
  • Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
  • The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC
Your ISO is located on your desktop.

Burn the ISO and boot from it. You will get a recovery console. At the prompt type chkdsk /r

I just realized that you have a netbook.

Do you have an external USB CD-ROM drive that the computer can boot from?

Also, what is the service tag. I can't find it on the Dell website.
