Microsoft Word 6.0 Error Message

I can't open any previous Word files in my Documents folder or create any new ones. Keep receiving a file permission error..."another user is using this file, do you want to make a copy"?

I am not on an Office network. Operating system is MacOs 8.6.
Also having trouble opening PDF documents. Error message " Unable to open a temporary file".

The two issues appear to be connected.

Any help is appreciated!
