The current problems are
The computer comes up with "found new usb device" when I turn on the internal wireless chip
It offers to go into the recovery console when starting up (then it starts up as normal)

OK recovery console to start with as it is an easy one
Right click "my computer" and select properties
When the tab opens select advanced
Remove the ticks from time to display operating systems
The screenshots are from windows 7 but are similar to XP

For the wireless could you go to device manager and let me know if there are any yellow marks in it

Yes there are yellow marks I've attached a file showing what the file manager is looking like. The 'usb device' shows up when the wireless chip is switched on. Tried reinstalling Intel proset and drivers but no change.
I've just looked a bit closer and I think that it must be the Bluetooth device (why usb I've no idea). In properties/details for the device it contains a code: USB\VID_413C&PID_8140\5&2B21B30F&0&2 and googling a truncated bit of this code reveals that the device is a standard dell bluetooth module USB\VID_413C&PID_8140

Hi Essexboy,
thanks very much for your assistance. I managed to clear the yellow marks. I found that the uninstalled device was the bluetooth chip so I installed the drivers and everything seems to be back and better than before. Although still not sure how to avoid virusses beyond av software and careful browsing.
If there's anything else you'd recommend me doing let mw know.
Cheers
