Garbled Text on Boot Up in Vista

Hi- issue is with desktop PC on Windows Vista.
I can boot, but issue is when Windows comes up, all text is garbled and unreadable. Assuming bug in registry. Was able to do scans with StopZilla and ESET NOD 32 but did not find the bugs. Tried PF8 on restart but restore doesn't have old enough restore point. Suggestions ? Thank you.
