I built my own computer about a month ago, and it was working great until about a week ago.

I have been experiencing system freezes accompanied by a loud screeching noise coming from my speakers. It normally happens while playing Crysis, Crysis 2, or Morrowind. Although the problem recently happened while I was watching a video online.

I've done a clean install of my NVIDIA graphics drivers, I've updated my BIOS, I've run anti-virus scans, I've checked my HDD to make sure it is working right, and I've been watching my temps. All to no avail.

I've run out of ideas, and I'm about ready to do a clean install of Windows 7. Does anyone have any other tests I can run to potentially find the problem?

Here's my dxdiag:

Hi pz3shwks and :)
Check out your Ram http://windows.micro...n-your-computer or
http://www.geekstogo...sing-memtest86/

Download Speedfan and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows. The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached. If you are running on a vista machine, please go to where you installed the program and run the program as administrator.

(this is a screenshot from a vista machine)

Also post the PSU details with your next reply, brand name and output please.

Edit: since the OP, I've done a clean install of Windows, hoping it would fix the problem. It hasn't.

No problems were detected by the Windows Memory Test.

Here's a link to my PSU

And here's the Speed fan results:

Temps are ok as you reported the +12V reading however is very low so needs verifying.
Download and install Everest http://www.filehippo...d_everest_home/
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so your temps and voltages can be checked.

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI"

According to my motherboards software suite, my +12V is at 12.192 V. So, I imagine that is the correct number? Rather than the one from the Speedfan test

I also recently learned about this problem. I'm going to test that out.

I am aware of HD audio conflict between add on cards and integrated audio chips but not them causing lock-ups, drivers however are temperamental things.
If after checking out the above the issue is not resolved I suggest that you uninstall both Speedfan and Everest and download and run HWMonitor and post those results so the voltages can be checked; http://www.cpuid.com.../hwmonitor.html

I tried the audio driver fix, unfortunately that did not work.

Here are the hwmonitor results:

Edit: according to my BIOS suite, the +12V is jumping from 12.192 to 12.288. I emailed EVGA and they said "if you observe consistent fluctuations of more than .05 volts then this may be a sign of concern for a degraded or failing +12v rail."

The +12V rail is not the only concern at present as because you cannot also provide the +3.3V and +5V output we have no way of knowing what the PSU is putting out, trying a known good PSU is recommended as a priority.
Here is a table showing the PSU tolerances allowed;

Edit: I ran a gpu stress test using EVGA's OC Scanner. While it was running, there was an odd buzzing noise coming from my computer. I've never heard it until then. After 8:51 of the stress test, my entire system locked up and the odd buzzing noise stopped. And I had to power off the system by holding down the power button.

My +3.3V fluctuates from 3.408 to 3.424
My +5V is 5.120
My Vcore fluctuates from 0.872 to 0.984

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to “Run as Administrator”. After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. We prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Thanks to rshaffer61 for the above instructions :)

Once you have provided the above information I suggest that you do a comprehensive test of the Ram using MemTest
http://www.geekstogo...sing-memtest86/
You may want to run this overnight as it does take some time.

according to the PC Pit stop, everything is good. The only problems were: "Delete Temporary Files" and "Defragment C:", so nothing major. Apparently my PC is in the top 12%, too bad the [bleep] thing doesn't work right

I will give the MemTest a try next

Edit: I have my RAM back in, and I was going to show my friend this problem I've been having. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, my computer did not freeze after 50 minutes of playing video games and another hour of the OC Scanner GPU stress test.

I imagine this problem will pop up again tonight, then I will have to try my GPU inside my friends computer

Well, 1 stick is good.

Unfortunately, I'm having problems now that I took both RAM sticks out. When I put them back in, the computer won't boot up, but the LED's and fans all will. I'll have my friend help me out tomorrow and get back to you.

I'm also going to try swapping out my graphics card and see if that fixes the problem.

First try one stick of Ram at a time, try each stick in each slot and make a note of the results of each stick/slot.

Alright, I've finally tested both of my RAM sticks in each slot. I ran all the tests for 2 Passes (about 1 hour each test). No problems were reported.
