No, there is NO hardware that will read sims and let the computer call a phone. You might want to read this about free phone calling.

You can use PDAnet to tether your computer to the data line and use voip to make phone calls.

Sort of on this topic: If you have Rogers as your provider (in Canada), you can sign up for Rogers one number and make free calls (doesn't use your minutes or charge long distance) to any Canadian phone number from your computer. The call rings through on the other end as if it's from your cell phone(see www.rogersonenumber.ca ).

There may be other companies that also offer this functionality and/or wi-fi calling (where you get 'unlimited' minutes if you're connected to wi-fi at home. Only works with certain BlackBerries as far as I know. call is from the phone not computer.)

Hi, I made an account here just to post this.
Yes you can make calls through a PC using extra hardware. I have a 'modem' from Huawei which came with a software from the carrier enabling me to make and receive calls from PC using the PC sound device that is mic. and speakers.
I don't think you can find it easily as it bad for business of mobile phone makers. ( I was not able to find anything on google by doing simple searches)
