Nintendo 3DS backwards compatiblity?

My son wants a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas. My question: IS the 3DS backwards compatible? We already bought "Monster Jam: Path of Destruction" and I am now hoping this game play on the 3DS!

Is the Game a Ds/Nds game or rom becuase if it is you can as far as i know.
