Hey guys. I'm new to this forum. I joined hoping I would be able to get some help with my current problem. So anyways, for the past week, I've been experiencing some browsing issues. From pages loading slow to pages not even connecting. My Windows Live Messenger also wouldn't let me sign in. At first it was minor so I ignored it. But it was getting worse so I scanned my computer with the free version of Avast! last night. I found that my computer was infected with a Trojan.
File Name: C:\Users\Onday\AppData\Local\Temp\35C3.tmp
Severity: High
Threat: Win32:Alureon-AHX[Trj]

I just deleted it immediately. After that, I scanned my computer again with Avast! and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to make sure it was gone. Then I restarted my computer and reinstalled my Firefox. Browsing was a lot smoother. But it still felt like I was infected. Sometimes loading a page is slower than usual and it seems to be getting worse. Still not as extreme as before. My Windows Live Messenger wouldn't connect once in a while either. My MineCraft wouldn't connect once in a while as well. Note that these things never happened before I had the Trojan. I just scanned my computer again with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Avast! again. There were no problems.

I don't know if I still have the Trojan on my computer but even if it's gone can it still have remnant effects on my computer? I read that Alureon can allow the hacker to send malicious data as well as mess with my DNS and registry? Maybe my DNS and registry is messed up? How can I fix this problem? Any procedures I should've carried out besides changing all my passwords?

All advices and help are appreciated. Thanks!

Btw my computer is brand new. I don't have any other problems at all.

Hi there lets have a look at your system

Download aswMBR.exe ( 1.8mb ) to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Posted Image

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Posted Image

THEN

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

Omg thanks! Finally got a reply. I was getting impatient since I knew there was definitely something wrong with my browsers still. :) Anyway here are the logs and a screenshot of my OTL settings to make sure they are correct. Hope to hear from you soon. And thanks again~!

aswMBR is not reporting a problem with the MBR so lets get a second opinion

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    [2011/08/09 16:50:39 | 000,001,462 | -HS- | C] () -- C:\ProgramData\k70ct7q74s110t6p28n00va
    [2011/04/27 01:26:08 | 000,011,098 | -HS- | C] () -- C:\ProgramData\bs22e0lfpp34j074i6b2d1bg2602p17746vn00p2npdk

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.

    Posted Image
  • Check the boxes beside Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK.

    Posted Image
  • Click the Start Scan button.

    Posted Image
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
  • Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

    Posted Image
  • Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.

A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

Hello Essexboy. I just attempted to follow your steps but my computer crashed and went to the blue screen of death immediately after clicking "Run Fix". After my computer rebooted I attempted it a second time but the same exact thing happened. I closed all programs that I knew that were fine to be closed such as Skype, Firefox and etc. before I did it. I copied and pasted exactly as quoted. Since the first step didn't succeed I didn't attempt the second step yet.

Also, to let you know, until you may or may not be able to resolve my issue, I won't be doing anything else on my computer besides following your steps and watching videos from a safe site. My Firefox might also receive updates. This way you know that my computer won't be going through any major changes between our replies. I also want to let you know I am very grateful for your help.

OK the MBR infection has gone so strike one to the good guys... To kill the others I will need to use a stronger tool

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image

    Posted Image
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Okay, done with that. That seemed like one scary program you made me use. So many cautions while using. :)

There's a few things that happened during the process. A blue command prompt popped out while it was running and everything was in Chinese. After a few minutes, my computer rebooted and the blue command prompt popped out again and continued running. After another few minutes the log popped out. Maybe this is all normal but what didn't seemed normal was what happened afterwards. I attempted to open up Firefox so I could reply to this thread but a warning window popped up and said something along the lines of "Illegal operation on registry key" and Firefox would not open. Same thing happened when I tried to open MS Paint. I restarted my computer and everything is fine now, but was that normal?

Here's the log. I'll have to use my browser a bit longer to confirm if there are still problems so I'll get back to this thread in a bit. But it somehow feels like my computer is running a bit faster as well. Does ComboFix fixes computer overall as well?

Edit: Okay I have been browsing for a good 30 minutes and there seems to be no problem. Is it all fine now or is there anything else I should do? And if it's all fine now, do you know what was going on with my browser?

That sometimes occurs if combofix fails to release the registry, but a reboot will clear it

The chinese was from the QQ messenger that is installed on your system

Let me know what your current problems are and we will proceed from there

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I am receiving no more problems right now. The only thing that is bothering me are these hidden icons showing up all over my computer such as "desktop.ini" on the desktop. They showed up after following one of your steps, I think it was the OTL step. Is there a way to get rid of them?

Yep consider them re-hidden once you have done this :)

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
