Following a week long power outage, I'm having difficulty getting my system to boot (Window 7 Pro). I shut down prior to loosing power, so I don't think I took any damage (plus connected through UPS). It takes the system well over an hour to reach the login screen and around another hour to fully boot. I've had to leave it overnight to get my desktop loaded, but then can't really do anything with it since any application take so long to load, I find myself having to leave before I can do anything or the system appears to become unresponsive. I tried a system restore to a previous operating point, but that hasn't helped.

Is there any self booting applications I can use to help determine whether I have a Windows system problem or a malware problem. I've also, tried disconnecting all non-essential devices (ext HD, USB connected equipment, internal data drives) - nothing has helped.

I have a desktop unit from
CyberPower Inc.
CPU: Intel i7-950
MB: GigaByte X58A-UD3R w 6GB
running Win 7 Pro SP1
Main HD is 1TB with over 800GB Free

I run Microsoft Security Essentials, Comodo Firewall, MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware

So far, i've only had a chance to wait through a full boot, and do a drive clean up to remove all temp files.
I locked up upon shutting down and I'm now try to boot in safe mode, but its sooooooo slow. I'm watching the
drivers load about 1 every 30 seconds (seems to have really hung up on CLASSPNP.SYS over 5 min now). Needless to say this will take some time.

One thing worth mentioning is that when my desktop finally booted, Comodo Firewall and MS Security Essentials were disabled
and Windows 7 was reporting an authentication problem.

I'm tempted to run the AVG Boot CD and see if that helps any, but I'll wait for your recommendations.

I understand this will take time and I have no problem waiting for your results.
The first thing I want to take a look at is what is running in the background.

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

OK, Thanks for your patients and your help.

I've attached the AutoRuns.txt file taken from my machine after booting normally.

Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ "Adobe ARM"
+ "JMB36X IDE Setup"
+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "Google Update"
+ "Steam" I believe this is for gaming and does not need to autorun

When done restart computer and then:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Please do not run any other Auslogics programs other then this one as they may cause unwanted results.

OK, I'm working on this now, but it may take a while. Rebooting took about 5 hours to complete, and I finally got TFC to start running. We'll see how it does.

I noticed this time the full message I'm getting about Windows 7 perhaps being counterfeit and I have written on my desktop that my copy of Windows 7 Build 7601 is not genuine. Clearly it is as it was installed by the builder and I have a COA sticker on my computer.

More to follow ....

OK I'll watch for your results.
The notice could mean system files are corrupted or maybe even a hidden infection.

TFC finished and did clean up a lot of space, but booting is still sluggish. I'd say defrag is out of the question at this speed.

I was beginning to worry about hardware being the cause, so I booted off of AVG Recovery Disk ... just to see, and that's moving along fine.

I hope I'm not making things worse, but while in AVG - I just started a scan of all volumes.

any suggestions at this point ...

Please try the Auslogics Defrag only. Windows defrag does not do as good of a job and Auslogics will not take as much time to do.

Defrag is still running - it's up to about 20% complete with my C Drive, but it's taken 6 1/2 hours to get here! Do you think it's worth proceeding with this. It might take another day to finish.

Something obviously is slowing you down and I am going through the OS first to make sure you have no errors there.
Next we will work with the hardware but please let the defrag finish. :)

OK, I'll let you know when it's done. I seemed to be running at near normal speed when I booted from CD using the Linux based AVG Recovery disk. Not sure if that can completely rule out hardware.
