i read the "read this first" topic and folowed the suggestions after my computer was infected with with various spyware, including smithfraud (i followed directions from other threads, including the clean up and registar lite stuff),...
spybot search and destroy was run and found several spyware
ewido was run and various items were removed, it was run again after there still seemed things to be wrong. this is the latest report:

in the hijack this log i can still see references to a "security iguard" which pops up in other users posts as being a bad guy, but i can't find it in the explorer (yes hidden files can be viewed). and i am not sure to delete it or not because i know bad files can have the same name as good files and the location of a file is an important indicator as to whether they should be deleted or not. so i wanted to check wiht you guys first.
and there is also a reference to mytotalsearch. it is listed in teh "add/remove programs" in the control panel but i can't delete it. when i try i get a rundll error that says:

error loading c:\progra~1\mytot~1\bar\1.bin\mtsbar.dll
the specified module could not be found.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please disable teatimer. It will interfere with the fix.
Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

i highlighted something in red that i have no idea what it is and am also quite suspicious about.
and i discoverd two suspicious icons in my startmenu, rightclicking and checking properties tells me they are links to the following websites:

Reboot into safe mode and find these files and delete them:

Instead of just deleting the icons of the suspicious site, do a search of your system and tell me if there are any other places where that site is listed.

i had to search big time. no references to that site were found. the only things that i did find were the shortcut links called spam filters and computer security in
c:\documents and settings\allusers\startmenu (of course)
and the icon file (spam.ico) in
c:\windows\system32
together with a few other icons of baddies that were removed.
i found the other files you mentioned and deleted them.
