Might the high CPU usage indication be related to two other conditions I am experiencing: 1. my mouse pointer frequently freezes for several seconds (5 or 10) and then (almost always) automatically unfreezes; and 2. the system seems to be responding sluggishly when working the internet? Thanks.

Lets take a look to see what's running.
Listproccess
A very small program that simply lists the processes that Task Manager lists, including the full path name so you can see what program they are part of. You can easily copy and paste the list into a text file for before/after comparisons, or to email/forum when asking for computer help. You may be surprised at what is running on your computer! Some processes waste a lot of computer resources and make your computer sluggish.
Download ListProcesses for Windows HERE Save the file to the desktop.
- Once downloaded to the desktop
- Double click the Listproccess Icon
- Click run
- When the window opens "select" GetList
- Scroll to bottom of the window and click on Copy
- Reply to this thread and paste the contents of the list so we can see it.

You're running out of free space on the "C" drive. Windows needs 20% free space to run efficiently. You need to take a serious look at those programs listed and start getting rid of the ones you do not use. That will create more free space. You should have at least 6GB Free you only have 2.28GB free.2 Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:33.87 GB) (Free:2.28 GB) NTFS
Here's a list of items that must go
I would strongly consider running pcdecrapifier HERE Then go through the list of installed programs and see what's left to get rid of.Ask Toolbar (Version: 1.9.1.0)

Are you using this backup program GFI Backup 2009 - Home Edition (Version: 3.0) If not I would consider getting rid of it.
All the Sonic programs?
Logitech programs are you actually using these?
- Logitech Audio Echo Cancellation Component (Version: 10.50.1096)
- Logitech Desktop Messenger (Version: 2.52.18)
- Logitech QuickCam Software (Version: 8.47.0000)
- Logitech SetPoint (Version: 4.60)
- Logitech Video Enumerator (Version: 10.50.1096)
- Logitech® Camera Driver
Mozilla Firefox (3.6.24) (Version: 3.6.24 (en-US)) Out of date! We can up date it later....
All that printer software!! Is that printer even connected, printer software always installs a lot of junk!
HP Deskjet 1050 J410 series Basic Device Software (Version: 22.50.231.0)
HP Deskjet 1050 J410 series Help (Version: 140.0.66.66)
HP Deskjet 1050 J410 series Product Improvement Study (Version: 22.50.231.0)
HP Imaging Device Functions 8.0 (Version: 8.0)
HP Photo Creations (Version: 1.0.0.3781)
HP Update (Version: 4.000.012.001)
See what I mean take a close look and get rid of some of the build up, this will generate free space and will also stop some items from running at start up. What about all the Dell programs too?
- See if you can get your Free space at least to 6GB or more.
- Trouble uninstalling anything let us know.
- When you complete post another MiniToolBox log by Farbar.

Using CP\Add and Remove Software I was able to remove many of the junk applications in your suggestion. But:
1. Several of the applications you listed do not show in the listing of applications: There is no KhalI Wrapper for example. Similarly I don’t see Logitech Video Enumerator.
Why do some of my applications appear in the Start/All Programs listing but not on the Add or Remove listing?
Where did you spot some of the programs that are not on the Add/Remove listing?
2. Is there another route (other than Add/Remove Programs) I should take to get rid of some of the xcess programs?
3. I see that the vast amount of my hard drive memory is consumed by stuff other than these applications. Is there a way to see what are the big users? Could they be photos or, maybe, stuff I may have inadvertently downloaded from iTunes (once before, years ago, that was a problem I had). How can I check how much memory iTunes is consuming?
4. And, FWIW, how can I make better use of the vast amount of memory I have in my Ebook (E: drive)?

is there another route (other than Add/Remove Programs) I should take to get rid of some of the xcess programs?
Click>Start>click MyComputer Double click "C" (Local Disc) Look for Program files folder double click it. This is where the majority of programs install. Once you're in that folder look for example KhalI Wrapper folder, Hint if you hit the K KEY on the key board it will highlight the folders that start with "K" once you find the folder right click on it and delete it.
This program Windows Directory Statistics will show where a lot of stuff is and how much space is being used. Get it from HERE
They sure could, look in the Documents folder, for picture folders, My music, etc.Could they be photos or, maybe, stuff I may have inadvertently downloaded from iTunes
And, FWIW, how can I make better use of the vast amount of memory I have in my Ebook
Drag your photos to it. Drag any .doc files to it. I'm betting you have a lot of stuff in the My Documents folder.
Also
Download Ccleaner HERE Install it, then open it, and click "Analyze" then hit "Run Cleaner" keep doing that until it shows 0 bytes. Close your browser windows when running it.
Next
Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.
Download TFC by OldTimer http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe to your desktop.
Double-click TFC.exe to run it.
Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator
TFC will close all programs when run, somake sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.
Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.
Remember we are removing files so use caution when in doubt don't do anything, When is the last time you emptied the recycle bin you wont gain any space until you do that.
Let me know when that's done.

1. At the rate at which I am gaining more free space on my C:drive it seems that I will never get to 6GB of free space. Wherever are these 30+ GB I am using now? How can I locate them?
2. Years ago when I first bought an iPod I signed up (through iTunes) for a half dozen free weekly magazine audio downloads ... and then forgot that I had done so. A year later I discovered that my C:drive was all full of these downloads. I wonder if something like that hasn't happened again. How do I determine how many bytes I am consuming in iTunes right now?
3. I see from Task Manager that I am running 51 "processes." Does that sound excessive? Just what are these processes? Could they be causing my cursor to freeze for 3 to 20 seconds? Should I be screening these processes to see what I can eliminate? How?

But when I run TreeSize Free the result shows there is 3+GB in Recycler!
Can you see what I am doing wrong; why the disparity?

Whilst zep516 is offline I will offer some help and then when he returns, he will resume.
I have helped you before on a JPEG issue, on which by the way you said you would post the results. However you have not done so.
Please do follow your threads to a conclusion or post that help is no longer required etc.
Please do not just leave them in mid-air so to speak.
That said -
The recycle bin on Xp of course ONLY shows what is in the bin.
I know that sounds obvious but the Recycler you mention is not the same as the bin.
http://answers.micro...83-616ca62da1e2
Go Tools Folder options, check Show fhidden files and folders and uncheck Hide Protected operating system files.
Now you should see the recycler folder.
"Recycler" is a hidden folder so go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check "Show hidden files and folders"
Remove the check from
"Hide protected operating system files"
You will receive a warning but just go ahead. Go back later to hide them again.
You will then see the "Recycler" folder C:\Recycler
Is there a deleted user account - but with files maintained. - if so the recycler folder for that user may provide you with the answer.
and the recycler on any other drives
and if you right click the recycle bin icon and click properties you can then confirm the drives allocated the recycle bin.
