So this is the first time I've ever posted on any forum. Please forgive me for being a neophyte! I'm trying to fix a computer that is running Windows 7 64-bit. The AV is ESET and keeps finding a trojan called Win32/OlmarikTDL4.exe unable to clean. I've run several programs to try to clean manually (including combofix, which I NOW know isn't good to run unless told to), but to no avail. I've attached both my combofix and tdsskiller logs. Please help and thanks!Attached File  ComboFix.txt   19.03KB   658 downloadsAttached File  TDSSKiller.2.6.19.0_18.11.2011_09.27.15_log.txt   72.27KB   654 downloads

Hi there I have two programmes for you to run

Download aswMBR.exe ( 1.8mb ) to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Posted Image

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Posted Image

THEN

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    consrv.dll
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

aswMBR is not showing an infection however, there is an unknown present so I would like to investigate the MBR a bit further

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your Desktop. Run the application.

If no infection is found, it will produce a report on the desktop. Post that report in your next reply.

If an infection is found, you will be presented with the following dialog:

Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Type N and press Enter. A report will be produced on the desktop. Post that report in your next reply.

OK 'tis the new variant.. This can only be cured from the windows CD

If you do not have the CD we can create one

Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc

Note: the below can only be done if your machine has a a type of CD/R or DVD/R optical drive installed. Also depending on the exact type of OEM your machine has you may be unable to actually create a SRD.

  • Click on Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> Run...(or the Windows key and R together) to bring up the Run box, then copy/paste the following command into the box and click on OK:

    recdisc.exe

  • Allow the UAC(User Account Control) prompt via selecting Yes.
  • You should now see a menu like the below:-
Posted Image

  • Put a blank rewritable CD/DVD in your optical(CD/DVD) drive and then click on Create disc.
  • Note: If a AutoPlay window pops up, just close it.
  • When the SRD has been created you will see the below:-
Posted Image

  • Now click on Close >> OK. Leave the disc in the drive as we will be using it shortly.
  • You now have a Windows 7 System Repair Disc.

Reboot with the CD in the drive

When you reboot you will see this although yours will say windows 7. Click repair my computer
Posted Image

Select your operating system
Posted Image

Select Command prompt
Posted Image

At the command prompt type the following

  • Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
  • Once finished type Exit

Reboot to normal windows and run MBRcheck again please

I got to the system recovery options screen where you would select your operating system. However, there is not an option to select from. There is a message that says "If your operating system isn't listed, click Load Drivers and then install drivers for your hard disks." I have the media disks 1-4 from Dell, but when I put disk 1 in, it's asking me to "click OK to select the driver." Unfortunately, there are so many folders and places to look for that I have no idea where to begin to select the driver. The folder options are:
  • CSD
  • DIAGS
  • HTML
  • I386
  • SUPPORT
  • UPC32
  • X64;
  • ZIPFILES
  • AUTORCD
  • BOOT
  • CHOICE
  • DOSMENU
  • RCDMENU
  • REBOOT

If you could point me to what type of file I'm looking for and where to begin, that would be great. Sorry I should probably know this.

Just another note is that I'm using the reinstallation DVD that came with the computer. I didn't create the disk. If you think I should create the recovery disk following your steps above, is it possible to create the image to a network drive and then burn onto a disk using a different computer? Unfortunately, this particular computer doesn't have a DVD/R or CD/R drive.

Could you go back to normal mode please and do a little check for me - Also is it possible that you could use a USB CD as we actually need to boot the system from the recovery disc

Do the following:
  • Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
  • Click on the System and Security link.

Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.
  • In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.
  • In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.
  • When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.

After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.

Note: If you don't see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.
Take a screen Shot of the Disk Management Window and attach the screen shot to your next reply

Hello, here is the screen shot:

Also, I have a DVD drive, I just can't write to the drive. I think someone saved $15 there. Yahoo. Pain in the butt though when you need a writeable drive. Let me know if the screen shot didn't come through. I wasn't sure the best way to do that.

It has a CD drive. I just can't write to it. Will that work? I'm able to boot from a disk.
