hi
i tried to close down the machine via the on screen start button and it wouldn't stop
i pressed the off button
next time i pressed the start button i got a black screen + message
"windows did not start successfully. if a previous start was interupted by power failure restart normaly"
i told it to start normaly and it went into a loop and won't start

after looking on the forum i tried ARCDC

i typed:
D:
cd ExtraFiles
copy userinit.exe c:\windows\system32

i got: can't locate the required file

when i changed the 3rd line to: copy c:\windows\system32 userinit.exe
i got: access denied

can you throw any light on this for me?
i don't know what the cause could have been
i don't go on suspect sites so i can't see it being a virus

the motherboard is: conroe 1333 D667 dual channel

system: 3gig dual core intel cpu
2gig dd11 ram
250gig hdd
lightscribe dvd r wr

as well as the steps stated above i've also ran mem test and found the memory to be ok

o/s: xp sp3

although there's lots of free space on the hdd i can't tell you exactly how much
because i can't access it

Repair Installation Instructions

· Insert your Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM and then Restart your computer.

· At the first post screen start tapping the Del key to enter System Bios
· Find the Advance Options or Boot Sequence screen.
· You will need to change the boot sequence so that the CDrom is first and the HD is second.
· Press F10 to Save and Exit and then press Enter to accept.
· The system will now reboot
· When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
· When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER
· To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
· At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. DO NOT SELECT THIS OPTION.

· On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
· Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected and highlighted in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.
· Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

there is no "R" option on the screen following the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen

the 3 options are: set up windows on selected item - enter
create a partition in the unpartitioned space - C
delete selected partition - D

Reread the instructions again. You have to press setup XP and then you follow the prompts.

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

nothing happens when i press the r key at this point

it's a different screen to the one in the instructions you pointed me to earlier [You can also go HERE to read a step by step tutorial with screenshots.]

number one is what you want as you have to tell it which installation you want to work with.

next screen says:
The partition is either damaged, not formatted, or formatted with an incompatible file system.
To continue setup must format this partition.
CAUTION - formatting will delete any file on the partition.

OK lets step back a minute and check the hard drive itself.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, try the Hitachi DFT CD Image version of the software

to make the cd bootable the burning program is asking for:

boot sectors file

do you know what this is?

If you download the ISO type and use the burn program in the instructions it should not be asking for that.
What file did you download exactly?

its a western digital hdd and w.d. recomend using this file for windows xp

i can't find an iso

No you don't want the windows version at all.
Use the DOS cd ISO version and follow the instructions on how to burn it in my post. If no DOS cd ISO version is available then get the Seatools DOS cd ISO version. It will test just about every drive.

managed to get cd made and loaded
test is started and will take 2.5 hours
