used: "seatoolsdos223all" to test hdd

result: bad sector found [ fail ]

can not tell it to repair because the mouse does not respond

Bad sector would mean possible bad hard drive.
As far as mouse not working you can use the Tab button to highlight the right entry and then click Enter.

bit the bullet
fitted new hdd
loaded win xp
hooked the old [bad sector] hdd to the motherboard
managed to access the data on this drive
