Hello everyone

u see when i turn on my comp... a dialogue box comes with like a 20seconds timer saying that my user profile is corrupt or cant be read and that i need check with my network administrator and it says that there is and inpage operation error. it then place me onto another temporary profile in which i cant save anything. when i tried the "chkdsk l:/f" in cmd, it said cannot open volume for direct access.

so could anyone help and tell me wat im supposed to do to get my old profile back and bring back everything to normal????

If a name brand system then what brand, make and model is the system?
If custom built then what brand, make and model is the motherboard
Total memory installed
Total hard drive capacity and free space
What steps have you taken so far to resolve the issue, besides the attempted chkdsk.


When you reply please confirm that Windows is on L drive as it appears that you have set a chkdsk cmd on that drive letter.

i thank you for paying attention to my problem.

first of all .. as u had asked,
i am using a desktop ,, i'm no computer expert so i dont know much about my computer .. though, i can give u the information i know.

OS- Windows XP professional version 2002 service pack 2
Pentium R dual core E5200 @ 2.50 GHz,2.52 Ghz, 0.99 GB RAM

next my comp has 4 drives c,e,f and g drives.
total space -148.8 GB (all four drives put together)
free space available - 38.42GB (all drives put together)
i have not done anything of my own other than the chkdsk
this all i know .. if there is anything else required please let me know. Thankyou

Please run the following command at the C:\ prompt

chkdsk /r

Note space please between chkdsk and the /r.

Agree the message to run on restart and do so please.

NOTE this is a five stage check please do NOT interrrupt it.

i have done as you said

but it wrote
"cannot lock current drive"
it asked for checking once the comp restarts i agreed.

Yes, that is what should happen - you cannot chkdsk a drive that is being accessed. - hence below from my previous.

guess what.. the problems fixed!!!!

i cant thank you enough !!!!

during chkdsk all, the first 3 stages went fine but on the 4th one they said
"windows replaced bad clusters in file 36513 of name \DOCUME~1\ADIMINI~1\NTUSER.DAT."
after that all went fine and my computer came back to normal..

also after everything loaded another message came saying
"one of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful"

was this due to a virus??
i suppose there wouldnt be anything else i need to do now since my computer has come to normal or is there?
how can i prevent this from occurring again?

HOWEVER we need to run some further tests.

I think it very unlikely that the computer has four hard drives.
More likely is that it has one hard drive with four partitions.

The more important consideration is the BAD cluster. It MAY be a sign that the hard drive is failing.

YOUR first and most important action is to secure your personal and important data - your images (photos), documents and music - files.
Ideally you need to back these up to an external hard drive.

YOU then need to create a complete image of the existing drive - on the external drive.

Then if the drive does fail - you are not facing disaster

So to proceed:
1. Do you have an external drive.

2. If not can you get one

3. If no - backup to flash pen and then TRANSFER ONLY your personal files to another computer.
The backup of these if they are important to you is YOUR FIRST TASK..

4. Go Control Panel Admin tools - Event Viewer.
On the left pane click Application.
On the main window find the winlogon scrolling from the top.
Double click to open it.
Check that it is the chkdsk results.
If it is NOT find the next entry for winlogon and do the same.
When you have it - left click once on the double page symbol to the right of the window below the UP and DOWN arrows.

Then on your reply message right click and paste.
The chkdsk results will appear.

The more you close down and reboot that computer the greater the chance of the error returning. Additionally do not install anything on the drive until we have proceeded through this stage of resolution. As if the drive is failing, the more you install and use the greater the chance of FAILURE

yeah .. it is as u said .. i probably only have one drive with many partitions .. i really dont have a clue. here is the chkdsk details from control panel. and i dont think there is any way i can get an external hard disk.. anyway not now atleast.

This entry is the IMPORTANT one now
4 KB in bad sectors.

A Hard drive sector is, for this purpose, to be considered a sixe of 512 bytes.
There are 1000 bytes in a kilobyte.
and you may well already know, but for your information 1000 kilobytes in a megabyte.

You have 4Kb of bad sectors.

That is a sign that the disk drive is failing. How long it will last is impossible to say.

What is certain is that the advice I gave you previously, to backup your important data is vital.
As you do not have an external hard drive, use a flash pen drive and back it up to another computers hard drive.

Therefore you insert the flash drive and when it is recognised in My Computer, you COPY your personal data to the flash drive and then having CHECKED that it has copied you take out the flash drive (Using Safely remove hardware) the icon on the taskbar - right hand side.) and then of course on the other computer you MOVE the items from the flash drive to a Folder you have established and suitably named, on the hard drive of that computer.

You CANNOT fix them.
Windows chkdsk recovered your files from the bad sectors and re-wrote the data to good sectors. It then marked the sectors as bad, to prevent data being written to them in the future.

That is a sign that the disk drive is failing. How long it will last is impossible to say.
