Hi Geeks,

It's been a while since I last called on your excellent services. I need some assistance again with a different problem:

At the first boot-up of the day, my desktop occasionally freezes at the user log-in screen, or later at the desktop screen. It never responds to CRTL-ALT-DEL and I must use the power button to reboot.

Sometimes, after one of these reboots, it will crash during the boot sequence with the BSOD, citing errors such as APC_INDEX_MISMATCH or,IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. It automatically restarts, offering a Windows Repair option, which I choose. It then asks me whether I want to use System Restore or not. Irrespective of whether I choose System Restore or not, Vista then loads and seems to be stable. At least, until I shut-down and start again the next morning.

I have tried a lot of trouble shooting, including SCANNOW /SFC, CHKDISK, memory and HD diagnostics with nothing of note. I've looked at Event Viewer and noticed that a WMI issue (Event 10) features every time there is a freeze, or crash. But this may be a consequence, rather than a cause. I use Windows Update religiously, and regulary scan for malware etc. I have removed/changed some periphal devices, and checked in Device Manager that drivers are up to date. Recently, when the system was up and running ok, I knocked the side of the tower and got the BSOD.

So, are we looking hardware, software, or both?

Any help from a Geek who can help me sort this out would be much appreciated.

regards,
UnderSiege

Hello Under Siege

Hit start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then hit put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there, after hiding microsoft services?

Download CCLEANER from the link below:
http://download.piri.../ccsetup312.exe

Just DONT us the registry cleaner function of CCleaner unless you know what you are deleting exactly!!

Then open ccleaner hit the tools button then startup second one down below uninstall then in the bottom right hand corner of ccleaner hit save to text file.Save it to your desktop and post the startup.txt here in your next reply.
Download autoruns http://download.sysi...es/Autoruns.zip unzipt it run it right click any startup entry that reads file not found and delete.

Listproccess
A very small program that simply lists the processes that Task Manager lists, including the full path name so you can see what program they are part of. You can easily copy and paste the list into a text file for before/after comparisons, or to email/forum when asking for computer help. You may be surprised at what is running on your computer! Some processes waste a lot of computer resources and make your computer sluggish.
Download ListProcesses for Windows HERE
http://www.softwares...stProcesses.exe Save the file to the desktop.

Once downloaded to the desktop
Double click the Listproccess Icon
Click run
When the window opens "select" GetList
Scroll to bottom of the window and click on Copy
Reply to this thread and paste the contents of the list so we can see it.

Please download MiniToolBox HERE http://download.blee...MiniToolBox.exe When the box opens click save file, save it to the desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

List Last Ten Event Viewer Errors
List Mini Dump Files
Flush Dns
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop. (you will need to disable avast prior to running tfc.exe)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it.Not saying tfc will solve your issue but it wont hurt to empty your temp files.

Next.

Download blue screen viewer from the link below and install and run it to read the dump files created by windows.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

http://www.nirsoft.n...creen_view.html

Next uninstall this program.
Ask Toolbar (Version: 1.9.1.0)

Next open task manager and kill this process, see if the computer runs a bit better.
C:\Windows\system32\wbem\unsecapp.exe

Task Manager used to End Process of C:\Windows\system32\wbem\unsecapp.exe

A couple of the bluescreens were caused by Rapport (Version: 3.5.1108.55) It can cause issues if it were my machine I would uninstall it.
You will need to boot into safe mode to do that. Also did you have norton antivirus on this machine at some time?

I will uninstall Rapport, and either NAV or MacFee came as a bundled package on purchase. But I removed it, and installed AVG, then later I replaced that with Avast.

Ok run these tools please.
http://majorgeeks.co...13cd88621e1213a (avg removal tool)
http://majorgeeks.co...131482b8e4a8e42 (Norton removal tool)
http://majorgeeks.co...04f95b4c72f1b9e (McAfee removal tool)

If can remember which it was only run the removal tool for it McAfee/Norton but you need to run the Avg remover for sure along with one of the others or both if you cant recall which it came loaded with.

All 3 removal tools run. Both Norton and McAfee took some time, and required system restarts. After using the Norton removal tool, the system crashed during the restart with BSOD showing APC_INDEX_MISMATCH . But was ok after the McAfee removal and restart.

Do you have any USB devices connected?
Ok now what kind of computer do you have exactly?
Example: compaq presario c700
Example: dell inspiron 530

Also you say it freezes or crashes every morning.Since you have run those tools I would like you to reboot the machine and see if it happens now since you said it didnt happen after the mcafee removal tool was used.

Also as far as some basic stuff open an elevated command prompt and type sfc /scannow
http://www.howtogeek...a-system-files/

Plus unplug the tower open up the side.Get can of compressed air and blow out the machine and reseat the ram modules video card etc,see video Plug it back in and see how it goes.

USB devices connected are:
Genius keyboard
Dell optical mouse
Epson PX710w printer

Recently, I did have a Logitech wireless keyboard, mouse and webcam connected, but I disconnected those first as part of my earlier trouble-shooting.

The computer is a Packard Bell IMedia X2414

I have just shut down and started the machine now 3 times in a row without incident..... which is encouraging.

I will have to run SCANNOW and clean out the tower in the morning. I'll let you know

regards

Good morning Rockmilk

With the machine shut down for 8 hours, I had BIG problems on starting this morning. The 1st start seemed ok, but froze when loading applications. Then we went into a cycle of freezes, auto-restarts and one BSOD with "BAD_POOL_ERROR.

Anyway, am working now in SAFE MODE and have run sfc /scannow. The intial report says:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

I have attached the CBS log file, as it was too big to copy/paste into this post.

I will clean-out and re-seat the memory modules later, once I have got hold of an air duster.

Since this morning's post, I have re-seated the memory modules, checked all the power connections and generally cleaned out the inside of the tower with an air duster. The heat sink vanes were clogged with dust and fluff, which couldn't have helped.

I have shut down and started the machine a number times now with no incident..... however, the morning start awaits...

I've also had a closer look at the CBS log file attached to my previous post and, to my untrained eye, it doesn't look good. I am wondering whether intermittent hardware problems were causing freezes and crashes, which in turn corrupted some OS files, which in turn lead to instability, even when the hardware is behaving properly. Are there any tests we can do which would prove the integrity of the hardware? I really would like avoid doing a clean install, if the underlying problem is hardware related.

What are your thoughts?

I dont really have time to look over the logs tonight as I am busy did not wanna leave you hanging! I would like you to run check disk until I can get back to you monday. Hit start type cmd right click command prompt run as admin and type chkdsk /r select yes when it ask to schedule on next reboot then restart your machine. Here is a link explaining.
